PB hotel design editorial

That weathered steel facade — angular, faceted, catching Calgary's prairie light like something between a geode and a ship's hull — announced something different was coming to the downtown core long before the doors opened. The Dorian, Autograph Collection arrived in 2022 as the first building approved under Calgary's Exceptional Design standards, a distinction earned by GGA-Architecture (Gibbs Gage Architects) through a two-storey wraparound entrance clad in that distinctive oxidized steel, set against a custom frit curtain wall that carries the eye up all 27 storeys. The 308-room dual-brand tower places the Autograph Collection's 137 rooms on the upper floors, and the height pays off spectacularly: a rooftop terrace frames the glittering financial district skyline with the kind of unobstructed drama that no amount of interior styling can manufacture. Inside, CHIL Interior Design — working from B+H Architects — translated a 'Modern Day Wilde' concept into spaces that feel genuinely inhabited rather than themed. Guest rooms layer deep cobalt William Morris-style botanical wallpaper against pale houndstooth upholstery and brass-detailed white cabinetry, the Victorian reference held in tension with clean contemporary lines. A dressmaker's mannequin on a shelf, a gold porthole mirror above the bed — the wit is there, worn lightly. The restaurant carries a different register entirely: slate-tiled columns, brass orbital pendants, marble-topped tables, and forest-green velvet curtains pulling the palette toward something closer to a refined Parisian brasserie than Oscar Wilde's London drawing room, but the quality of attention throughout remains consistent.

The Dorian, Autograph Collection Reviews

"We stayed here for 2 nights on a weekend in February. The city itself is quiet, but the location of this hotel was perfect . An easy 5-10 minute uber drive to all the different areas. The room was clean and pretty. The bed was super comfy . We loved the new workout facility. The staff could not be nicer. The restaurant upstairs is pricey , 1 oz cocktails for $25 ! Valet available for your car. We would stay here again."

"Stayed in 1814 for two nights. Free upgrade. Awesome desk staff (not just for the upgrade, ha). Room was very spacious and the bed was comfortable. No outside noise. The bathroom was amazing and the pressure from the manual/hand shower was powerful. You will appreciate this hotel (and your room) a bit more if you have read A Picture of Dorian Gray (there is a copy on the nightstand!)."

"My fiancé attended her company Christmas party at The Wilde and so we decided to stay overnight and we’re so glad that we did. The room was cozy and very comfortable. A perfect place to unwind. We also enjoyed the food at the restaurant. Everything was delicious and prepared thoughtfully. What made it remarkable was the exceptional service from Red at Reception. His professionalism, sense of humour and attention to details were truly top notch and were the cherry on top of an already wonderful experience. Highly recommended!"

"We had an excellent stay at this hotel, and a big part of that experience was thanks to Red, the professional receptionist who assisted us during both check-in and check-out. From the moment we arrived, Red was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. His professionalism truly stood out, and it was clear that his love for his job and for providing great service comes straight from the heart. He went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly and made us feel valued as a guests. The room itself was very modern and chic. Beautifully designed, clean, and comfortable. While the price is on the higher side, the quality of the room combined with the outstanding service makes it worth it. Red’s exceptional hospitality alone makes every penny worthwhile. We would absolutely recommend this hotel and look forward to staying here again, especially knowing We’ll be greeted by such a dedicated and passionate staff."

"⭐ 1 Star Absolutely the worst hotel experience I have ever had. From the moment we arrived, the staff’s behaviour was shockingly unprofessional, disorganized, and downright dismissive. We waited 30–45 minutes just to check in. During that time, we were told three different floors for our room first 21, then 17, then 15 even though we specifically requested pet-free rooms due to severe allergies. The staff clearly had no idea which floors were pet-free and gave us conflicting information every time we asked. It was unsettling and honestly careless. It only got worse when we approached the valet to ask a simple question about underground parking. The valet literally ignored us, refused to answer, and then redirected us to someone who claimed to be a “manager” yet this person’s name does not appear anywhere on the hotel’s official staff listings. The interaction was extremely uncomfortable. We were spoken to in a tone that was dismissing, condescending, and cold. At this point, I cannot ignore the possibility that the treatment we received may have been influenced by race, appearance, or background, because the difference in how we were spoken to compared to other guests was painfully obvious. And that is absolutely unacceptable especially for a hotel under the Autograph Collection brand. I have traveled internationally and stayed in many hotels across Canada. I have never been treated like this. The way we were disregarded, confused, and made to feel like we did not belong in the space was disturbing. If you care about: • Basic respect • Clear information • Being treated like your presence matters then reconsider booking here. This experience was deeply disappointing and honestly left us feeling uncomfortable in a place we were supposed to relax and enjoy. Do better."
