Spread across a working farm on the flood plain of the Gouffre River, where the Laurentian mountains drop sharply toward the St. Lawrence, Hotel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix opened in 2015 as something genuinely unusual in Canadian hospitality: a full-scale agricultural hotel. The four-storey main building, clad in weathered Cor-Ten steel panels that warm to a deep rust against the surrounding meadows, was designed by the Montreal firm Provencher Roy, whose brief extended to integrating the hotel with the Laiterie Charlevoix dairy farm that has operated on the same land for generations. The 107 rooms divide between the main structure and a series of white-painted farm outbuildings — converted granaries and agricultural sheds — whose bleached board-and-batten interiors, heavy timber four-poster frames, open-plan bathrooms with freestanding soaking tubs, and iron-pipe hardware carry a barn aesthetic that avoids any slide into kitsch. The design tension the property navigates most successfully is between roughness and comfort. Inside the main building, double-height guestroom windows frame views across crop rows toward the Baie-Saint-Paul mountains, wire-sculpture windmill wall art and floral-upholstered headboards in chartreuse and charcoal giving the rooms an energy that feels more urban boutique than rural retreat. The restaurant pulls in the same direction — a suspended black steel fireplace hood anchoring a dining room finished in dark textured wall panels, orange carpet, and reclaimed fruit crates deployed as shelving — farm references sharpened into something considerably more metropolitan.

"It was like a college dorm. Second floor room with no elevator. Not a luxury hotel, not even close! The restaurant was very nice."

"We loved the location, the little village was quaint. We ate at the hotel and the food was delicious, very fresh ingredients and lovely drinks. The staff were superb. What we did not like was our room and its surroundings. Our room was a floor up with three sets of stairs and no lift. No one advised of this or asked if we were able bodied. Furthermore, the room was probably the worst we have stayed in with a bathtub either shower over in the middle of the room. Again, you had to be able to climb into the high bath with no support at all and shower in a very narrow shower which soaked the bedroom floor. You had to stand on or near a water plug which was a foot/ nail hazard and made for a very unpleasant shower experience . The room had a nice view outwards to the cows and alpacas however. The corridors leading to the rooms were grubby and really reduced the overall quality of the environment. Very disappointing indeed for the cost of it."

"If Canadians only knew about this place. A luxury hotel at reasonable rates, which has two restaurants (fancy and family), a working farm out back, multiple themed pavilions, free entertainment and activities! Too much to list… I’ll be back again and again!"

"Has earned a well deservesMichelin star 2 years running. Top notch service, and restaurant. Le Bercail is the main restaurant with a great menu. The breakfast buffet at Le Labour - is too good! I cannot begin to add the list of items. Everything is farm to table at this hotel (band in the region) which is now for its farm heartland. The Nordique Spa is wonderful - I love the steam/sauna/ hot and cold plunges. They offer nice massages too. Rooms are well appointed , maintained and spotless! I find there is little room for storage, and in microwaves, and fridge is a mini fridge… But…. That is nit picking. The grounds are amazing - with the farm animals there. I love the shirt walk to the Quai and the beach along the Baie. The place exudes peace and calm. Our second year and we will be back!!!!"
