PB hotel design editorial

Anchoring Montreal's Golden Square Mile at the corner of Sherbrooke and de la Montagne, a 18-storey tower designed by Lemay and Sid Lee Architecture announced a new register for Canadian luxury hospitality when Four Seasons Hotel Montreal opened in 2019. The facade visible from street level speaks in layers: a bronze-toned vertical fin screen frames the hotel entrance against a curtain-wall glass tower above, while an intricate white geometric lattice panel — drawing loosely on Arabesque patterning — animates the podium, giving the building a material complexity that most Canadian commercial towers never attempt. Luxury designer Gilles & Boissier handled the interiors across the hotel's 166 rooms and suites, establishing a palette of pale grey, warm taupe, and brass that the images confirm throughout. Guest rooms carry slender steel four-poster beds, backlit circular brass mirrors, and oversized floor-to-ceiling windows framing Montreal's mid-century streetscape; the effect is closer to a considered Paris apartment than a conventional business hotel. The indoor pool runs beneath a soaring white marble wall of dramatic veining, the geometry clean and almost monastic in its restraint. At ground level, Marcus — chef Marcus Samuelsson's restaurant — deploys a Carrara marble counter, leather-cushioned bar stools, copper pendant fixtures, and a terrace dense with tropical planting, pulling the building into the life of Sherbrooke Street with an energy the architecture above deliberately withholds.

"From arrival to check out my husband and I had a five-star experience. I was nervous about the parking/valet situation because of some other reviews but it couldn't have been more seamless - we pulled up and Miguel came over to welcome us, take our keys, and direct us where to go, and he was an absolute gem. Front desk staff were just as welcoming, kind and genuine. Our room was beautiful and spotless and comfortable, and the bed was excellent. The lighting in the ambiance was really unique and lovely. We were able to secure a late check-out and any time we had a question, front desk staff was accommodating and helpful (I wish I could remember the name of the woman who checked us in and out - she was LOVELY). We had breakfast at Marcus and really enjoyed it. Check-out was just as quick and easy. We liked using the in-room iPad to arrange for our car before we checked out, and it was a nice, simple way to request turndown service. We didn't get to use the pool because it was being filled while we were there, but we enjoyed using the sauna and steam room, and the gym equipment was top notch. The hotel itself is within a block of all the shopping you could hope to do on Sainte-Catherine St, and we always felt just around the corner from something good to eat, drink, or see. Would absolutely stay here again and again."

"We booked in for three nights over Christmas and our two adult children also had a room. It was a family celebration. Unfortunately the trouble started as we tried to pull up outside the hotel. There was one spot out front and a bunch of signs saying reserved. We had to drive around the block twice in order to get lucky and find the one space empty. Not a good beginning. Then, the actual lobby is on the third floor!? The street level lobby was beautifully decorated for the holidays but this was not continued in the actual lobby or the restaurant? I was disappointed that there was not more festive decorations. To cap it off, we had asked for early check in but didn't get it, so we had to sit and wait in the restaurant while paying for food we did not really want as we had already had lunch. The room was quite lovely with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom had a beautiful large bath, but, unfortunately, although the piping hot water flowed from the sink, the bath had only lukewarm water. I asked for a technician, who came and said that all the baths and showers were set to that temperature because people had burned themselves?? I got a call on the hotel phone after he left also confirming this. The manager did say it applied to the shower also but the shower actually gave hot water. This was a problem that we should not have experienced at all. The next day I took a bath and topped it up with kettles of hot water from the tap in the sink to boost the temperature. This was while we were paying over $800 for the night. The restaurant, Marcus, was disappointing as it was very casual and relaxed like a lower cost hotel breakfast place. We had booked Christmas dinner for the next day and asked to see the "festive menu". It was really disappointing. It was actually the ordinary dinner menu with the addition of wildly expensive Wagyu beef and Duck. There were no special desserts and no effort made to recognize Christmas in a culinary way. I will write a separate review of Marcus but suffice to say that the breakfast was equally mediocre and quite costly. I would not be returning to this hotel any time soon. The final problem was a biggie. When we returned home and noticed our credit card charges, we referenced the bill from the hotel and noticed a discrepancy of over $2,000 for the total on the two rooms. We had to phone the hotel and after a long wait while they were "checking" they admitted this was an error. Veronica did apologize as this was for some other guest not our charges at all. We are still waiting for the email from Veronica. She said she would send confirmation of the error and correction. I think the Four Seasons could do better."
