PB hotel design editorial

At the sharp corner where Sainte-Hélène meets Notre-Dame in Old Montreal, a Second Empire commercial building from 1871 — its grey limestone facade piled with rusticated arches, mansard roofline, and iron cresting — contains one of Quebec's most convincingly argued arguments for mid-century modernism as a preservation strategy. Hôtel Gault converted the former textile warehouse into a 30-room boutique hotel in 2002, with interiors conceived by local designer Anne Lafond that set polished concrete floors and warm maple millwork directly against exposed brick and rough fieldstone walls left entirely undisturbed. The contrast is the point. In the guestrooms, Pierre Paulin-style tulip chairs in teal and mustard sit on circular rugs beside low platform beds, while the original arched windows — now fitted with deep timber surrounds — frame views across to the Palais de Justice. The bar and breakfast room extend the same logic: Paulin's Orange Slice chairs in crimson are pulled up to slate-topped tables beneath a pressed-tin ceiling, with a vivid yellow Idée sofa anchoring the lounge beside raw masonry exposed mid-wall like a geological cross-section. Large-format black-and-white photography hung throughout gives the common areas the atmosphere of a private collector's residence rather than a hotel lobby, grounding the mid-century furniture in something more personal and less curated.

"Hotel Gault is exceptional. From the moment I walked into the lobby, I felt completely at ease. My room was absolutely beautiful—so spacious and clean—with fabulous little touches I wasn’t expecting, like robes and slippers. It felt more like a stylish small apartment than a hotel room. I really enjoyed making a coffee from the machine and watching the Olympics as the sun rose—such a peaceful, memorable moment. The only downside was the gym, which was very small. As the hotel is so well equipped otherwise, I was quite surprised. There was no mat for floor work and barely enough space for more than two people to use the machines comfortably. There was also no water or towels provided, which in my experience have been complimentary in other hotels in Montreal. The staff were very helpful and I loved the district, I didn't have breakfast included so I can't comment on that, but there was an amazing vegan restaurant at the end of the road, which was an absolute delight. Overall though, a wonderful stay, I didn't want to leave."

"I think Hôtel Gault is quite beautiful and has an excellent location. I was upgraded to the loft and it was really very comfortable and spacious with every detail attended to. I do think the breakfast situation could be better. For the amount being charged, the feeling of receiving a pre-made plate is a buzzkill. The smoked salmon bagel was OK because it is a bagel, but the oatmeal was really poorly presented. I'd suggest some more thought in that department. Given the hotel's proximity to Bon Marche and other grocery stores, extras such as a pastry counter or a cheese/confits counter would be good additions."

"I like the subtle renovations/fixes done. Bed was very comfortable. I'd maybe add a make-up light in the bathroom, though."
