Two heritage stone buildings dating to the early nineteenth century on Rue Saint-Paul, stitched together and connected to a new concrete tower by a glazed atrium — that is the structural argument at the heart of Hotel William Gray, which opened in Old Montreal in 2016 under the direction of Montreal firm Provencher Roy. The intervention is visible immediately from the street: rough-cut grey limestone masonry meeting a curtain-wall glass box, the junction announced rather than disguised, the old fabric and the new construction held in deliberate contrast. The 128-room property rises eight floors in its contemporary wing, the rooftop terrace above framing an unobstructed view across the Marché Bonsecours dome to the St. Lawrence River and the Jacques Cartier Bridge beyond. Inside, the interiors carry an atmosphere closer to a well-considered urban apartment than a conventional hotel — exposed board-formed concrete ceilings left raw throughout the guest rooms, wide-plank pale oak flooring underfoot, and dark-stained wood headboards scaled to read as architectural panels rather than furniture. A recurring mustard-yellow wingback chair punctuates the rooms with a single chromatic note against the otherwise restrained palette of white, charcoal, and natural timber. The lobby bar moves between tufted cognac leather seating and curved velvet chairs in slate grey, the backlit spirits cabinet anchoring one wall in warm walnut millwork. The rooftop deploys woven rattan pendants and geometric black polypropylene chairs against the open Montreal skyline — casual in material, serious in view.

"After a cab I ordered early that morning did not show up for our afternoon trip to the airport, the gentlemen at the front took us under their wing - grabbed all our suitcases and insisted we wait on their sofas while he called us a cab driver he knew. Just so above and beyond kind. Very grateful for the care for me and my girls. Beautiful part of Montreal to stay in to boot."

"I had my wedding reception here and it was amazing! From the very beginning, Aline answered all my questions and concerns up until the day of our reception. We had it in the Edward Ballroom and they did a stunning job on setting up the hall. All my guests kept telling me how beautiful the venue was and how great the food was (especially the appetizers)! I would highly recommend!"

"The William Gray hotel is a beautiful, well-situated boutique hotel in Old Montreal. The room was modern and extremely comfortable. The shower was fantastic! We enjoyed a great meal on their 8th floor patio restaurant with amazing views of the city. We highly recommend this hotel - you will not be disappointed! 5 out of 5 stars!"

"You have to pay extra and reserve everything. Sauna/steam room? Pool? These are a "spa" and, um, tiny pool that you have to reserve one of three 4-hr windows to access. $95 for your 4-hour window, better hope that lines up with your schedule! Want breakfast? Order room service. It's just the restaurant downstairs but with a reduced menu for some reason, and you get to pay extra for them bringing it up to your room. On the rooftop terrace I was served a single scallop and a triangle of duck breast (literally a quarter of one breast) and my bill was nearly $120. Service ranges from apathetic to hostile. E.g. wife and I went to the rooftop terrace at 2:30pm for late Friday lunch. Restaurant is nearly empty, but hostess said no tables by the window were available. We discuss for a bit and when we say "I don't know, let's just go somewhere where we can sit where we want" her eyes dart up and she gives us a passive-aggressive "uh, bye!""

"We stayed one night at The Residence which was incredible! Perfect location in Old Montreal. Immaculately clean. Great atmosphere. Peaceful sleep. We made an error with our booking.
