PB hotel design editorial

Two heritage stone buildings dating to the early nineteenth century on Rue Saint-Paul, stitched together and connected to a new concrete tower by a glazed atrium — that is the structural argument at the heart of Hotel William Gray, which opened in Old Montreal in 2016 under the direction of Montreal firm Provencher Roy. The intervention is visible immediately from the street: rough-cut grey limestone masonry meeting a curtain-wall glass box, the junction announced rather than disguised, the old fabric and the new construction held in deliberate contrast. The 128-room property rises eight floors in its contemporary wing, the rooftop terrace above framing an unobstructed view across the Marché Bonsecours dome to the St. Lawrence River and the Jacques Cartier Bridge beyond. Inside, the interiors carry an atmosphere closer to a well-considered urban apartment than a conventional hotel — exposed board-formed concrete ceilings left raw throughout the guest rooms, wide-plank pale oak flooring underfoot, and dark-stained wood headboards scaled to read as architectural panels rather than furniture. A recurring mustard-yellow wingback chair punctuates the rooms with a single chromatic note against the otherwise restrained palette of white, charcoal, and natural timber. The lobby bar moves between tufted cognac leather seating and curved velvet chairs in slate grey, the backlit spirits cabinet anchoring one wall in warm walnut millwork. The rooftop deploys woven rattan pendants and geometric black polypropylene chairs against the open Montreal skyline — casual in material, serious in view.

"Hotel William Gray was a triumph from the moment I arrived. Not only was the team incredibly professional and kind, they went above and beyond to showcase exceptional customer service savvy. The property has elevated and bespoke design elements making its' dark and moody tones celebrate the existing architecture while providing a contemporary flare! The rooms are well maintained, very clean, and quiet. The shower experience is that of a luxury spa - with additional spa services available onsite. From the restaurants and bars available on property to the surrounding location, it is the perfect property to host a business meeting or personal vacation. This property is one I'll definitely visit in the future. BRAVO to the team - you've made a lifelong fan out of me!"

"We had an absolutely incredible stay at the William Gray Hotel during the F1 weekend! From the moment we arrived, the entire experience was fabulous. The concierge service was outstanding. A special mention goes to Eddie and Yurii, who provided extra assistance and were always willing to guide us with expert recommendations and help throughout our stay. Our Audi experience during the busy race weekend was seamless, thanks to their dedication.Every single department delivered top-notch service. The valet team, front desk staff, housekeeping, and check-out process were all flawless, professional, and welcoming. We couldn’t have asked for a better home base in Old Montreal. Highly recommended, and we cannot wait to return! PS- Be sure to try and book Room 622. What a view with the corner balcony!!"

"We stayed 1 night at the William Gray. Every expectation was exceeded. The atmosphere is very moody and chic. The room on the 6th floor was large, bed extremely comfortable, huge shower, amazing light with enormous windows that opened on to a stupidly spacious deck that had a great view. Very clean. No noise except for the occasional faint sound of another door closing in the hallway. The cost of the room was around $450 CAD which though pricey, was very reasonable considering everything this place has to offer. Restaurants, patios, spa, so many break out spaces, a cafe, a bar etc. We didn't see 1/4 of it, partly because we had breakfast on our private terrace, in beautiful robes : ). The location is in the heart of old port, the genuine epicentre of of old Montreal. The standout part of the experience for us was the service. The staff are extremely attentive, very caring and pleasant. We felt like family right away and the otherwise intimidating grandeur of the hotel felt like home. The night manager Alex was extremely helpful!"

"Had a great experience staying at Hotel William Grey with the Audi team for the Grand Prix weekend and honestly, this boutique hotel handled the chaos of F1 weekend in Montreal. Either grace and professionalism. The hospitality team was genuinely outstanding — Emma, Vincent, Diego, Kenny, Eddy and Dominique, you guys were incredible. It’s one thing to be professional, it’s another to actually make people feel taken care of, and you did both. With a group our size during one of the craziest weekends of the year in this city, that’s not easy. Every request was handled, every problem sorted before it became one. Thank you. And to Tom, Paolo and the entire valet team — I have to give them a special mention because they honestly made my life so much easier. When you’re coordinating logistics for an F1 program, vehicles are everything. From making sure the cars were ready and available when needed to accommodating the display in a tight, high traffic area, help to elevate the experience for everyone. That kind of reliability is worth its weight in gold on a race weekend. The hotel itself is beautiful — Old Montreal is the perfect backdrop and the rooftop is a great spot to wind down after a long day at the circuit. But what I’ll really remember is the people. That’s what separates a great hotel from a good one."
