PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1883 for George Stephen, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the limestone mansion on Drummond Street in Montreal's Golden Square Mile is among the finest examples of Second Empire residential architecture in North America. Scottish-born architect William Tutin Thomas designed the original structure with an extravagance that reflected Stephen's position at the apex of Canadian industrial wealth — carved stone cartouches, wrought iron balustrades bearing fleur-de-lis detailing, and interiors panelled in hand-carved mahogany that remain largely intact today. Le Mount Stephen opened as a hotel in 2017 after a sensitive restoration that preserved the historic house while appending a purpose-built tower behind it containing the majority of its 90 rooms. The contrast between old and new is the property's central drama. Inside the mansion, the bar and dining room retain their original coffered mahogany ceilings, stained glass lunettes, and wide-plank oak floors — all of it deepened to a saturated amber glow that gives the space an almost theatrical warmth, an oval bar with brass-footed stools dropped into the Victorian splendour with confident deliberateness. The tower rooms present an entirely different register: upholstered grid headboards in pale greige leather, geometric-patterned carpet in graphite and cream, floating platform beds with under-lit bases. The lobby bridge between the two worlds is clad in veined grey marble, polished to a high sheen, the hotel's heraldic crest mounted on a fluted stone wall above the reception seating arrangement.

"My wife and I booked a deluxe king room for a romantic getaway to Montreal. We had visited the bar on a previous visit and loved it so we were really looking forward to our stay. Check in was very smooth but the disappointment started as soon as we opened the door to our room. The lighting, blinds, and HVAC are controlled by a ridiculously complicated system, it took about half an hour to try to figure out how to dim the very bright, fluorescent colour temperature lighting as the blinds went up and down over, and over, and over…. The room was large but almost comically under furnished with a large unfurnished space that would’ve been great had we wanted to host an in-room dance party, but otherwise made the room feel barren. The walls were also rather plain (even though they were wallpapered throughout) and gave the room the feel of a Holiday Inn or similar chain hotel. The bathroom was nice, the shower was great and there was a very nice, large soaker tub. Minor quibbles related to water that pooled in the shower (tiles not properly sloped), and a loose shower control. For some reason the bathroom door is a large glass affair on a noisy slider that woke up my partner each time it was closed. Another disappointment was the view, we were on a higher floor but when the blind lifted the exterior wall only has a vignette of small windows. I guess this was done for exterior aesthetics, but in our opinion the in-room guest experience should govern. The common areas are nice but lacking in charm or character in the new part of the hotel (although the corridors were very nice and the gym is great). It should also be noted that the front facade of the old building is under construction so you have to enter through a small side door, none of this was disclosed by the hotel. Overall this is not a 5 star hotel and, although we really wanted to like this place, we can’t recommend it."

"For us, this was a very average experience. The lobby is pretty no-frills, and the front desk wasn’t particularly friendly. Maybe because we don’t speak French. The hallways on the guest floors are absolutely lovely though, with a beautiful mix of modern and antiques.. The bar is breathtakingly lovely. Our room was quite large, but had a very odd layout with lots of wasted space and few amenities. The bathroom felt disproportionately small, with a flat trough sink that led to water splashing everywhere whenever you used it. There a toilet bidet which we really appreciated but since the bathroom was so small the electric eye sensor went off with your every move, and the toilet lid constantly was opening. The shower area is a wet room with a bathtub and a shower, and funky color changing lights. The front of the hotel is closed due to construction, and it was so very difficult to figure out where the parking deck was. That was frustrating. The parking deck itself was very dusty as the equipment for the renovation is stored in there and our car got very dirty. Not sure that we would stay there again."

"The Mount Stephen is a majestic, yet modern hotel. The rooms are modern, the staff is old-world impeccable -- all at a reasonable price. The downtown location is convenient for both business and tourists."

"We will return to this hotel - it was excellent value. Great service, location, spacious functional rooms, loved the bar off the lobby both for drinks and appetizers- especially the hamachi crudo. Easy walk to McGill. Really appreciated the concierge William Chev who put together a little walking route for us to check out Montreal on our short stay."
