PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels in Canada carry the institutional weight of a building that has anchored Montreal's Golden Square Mile since 1912, when the Beaux-Arts structure on Sherbrooke Street West first announced itself as the city's most prestigious address. The Ritz-Carlton Montreal, one of the original properties in the Ritz-Carlton portfolio, was designed by the New York firm Warre & Wetmore — the same architects behind the Biltmore and Grand Central Terminal — and its terracotta-detailed facade, arched ground-floor loggia, and rusticated limestone base remain largely intact. The exterior image here reveals the jarring but now-settled contrast introduced during a major renovation completed around 2012, when a contemporary glass tower addition was grafted onto the historic structure, expanding the property to 129 rooms and suites while adding significant conference and residential capacity. Inside, the interiors navigate a tension between the hotel's Edwardian bones and a more contemporary decorative sensibility. Guestrooms show the signature wallcovering in a large-scale metallic floral motif, dark wengé-toned headboards, and pops of aubergine and fuchsia that give the rooms a polished energy without abandoning comfort. The suites gain warmth through wide-plank hardwood floors, lacquered geometric room dividers, and velvet armchairs in deep jewel tones. The bar area, photographed in moody evening light, pairs the original ornate plasterwork frieze and marble floor with a backlit onyx bottle wall and oversized Pop Art portraiture — an Audrey Hepburn print among them — anchoring the historic shell firmly in the present.

"One of my top favorite hotels in the world, wish I could give it 6 stars. We stayed here last year and I loved it, so was very happy that we ended up back in Montreal and could stay here again. Service is impeccable, I felt it as soon as we stepped out of the cab. They are just excellent. I booked a junior suite, they upgraded us to a corner. There was a lovely plate of fresh fruit welcoming us to our room. When I had to extend our stay unexpectedly, they handled it smoothly and immediately offered me the same rate, as well as noting that I could still check out on our original schedule if I needed to as I finished sorting out our plans. It’s obvious the entire staff takes enormous pride in this place; the bellman even rode up the elevator with me to finish telling me a story about the history of the hotel. The room was fabulous (I particularly loved having a fireplace, so cosy), the Palm Court restaurant is great, and I only wish I could travel to Montreal more often to stay there again."

"We had one of the most uncomfortable and frankly unacceptable experiences I’ve ever had at a hotel—especially at a property that positions itself as luxury. My 15-year-old son and I booked a Saturday night stay at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal at an extremely high rate, specifically because the New York Islanders were staying there. This is something we have done for years as part of our mother-son trips, and it has always been a positive and respectful experience. Upon check-in, the moment staff noticed we were wearing Islanders gear, we were immediately told we were not allowed to engage with or even speak to any players in any way. While we expressed that this was disappointing—given it was the primary reason we chose this hotel—we clearly stated we would respect their policy. What followed was shocking. Despite fully complying, we were then subjected to constant surveillance by two large security guards who followed us throughout the hotel—into the lobby, the gym area, the restaurant, and even near the restrooms—while we simply waited for our room to be ready. At no point did we approach, speak to, or attempt to interact with any players, even when they were in close proximity. The behavior of the security staff was not only excessive, it was intimidating and deeply inappropriate. At one point, we were even told to wait outside in the snow when we re-entered the lobby simply to locate a restroom. My son—who is a minor—was so uncomfortable that he described feeling physically violated by the experience. As a mother, that is completely unacceptable, and we ultimately felt we had no choice but to leave. We were treated not as paying guests, but as suspects—despite doing absolutely nothing wrong. If you are a woman or traveling with children, I would strongly caution you about staying here. For a hotel that prides itself on service and hospitality, this was the exact opposite."
