PB hotel design editorial

A former headquarters building on the corner of Victoria Square — the limestone-clad, nine-storey block that now houses W Montreal carries the posture of mid-century civic authority, its grid of punched windows and rusticated base suggesting a building designed to project institutional permanence rather than hospitality. Converted and opened in 2004, the W Montreal was among the brand's earliest international outposts, and the challenge it posed — animating a building whose architecture resisted spectacle — proved formative for how W positioned itself in older urban fabric. The interiors resolve that tension through contrast rather than deference. Guest rooms deploy black-and-gold chevron carpeting against white lacquered furniture and leather-upholstered task chairs, with relief-pattern wallcoverings behind the bed introducing a sculptural quality that pushes back against the rooms' relatively compact dimensions. The living room bar, visible in the images, stacks orange modular seating against deep teal banquettes beneath a suspended grid of black steel and linear lighting — a palette that tilts toward late-1960s Brazilian modernism without committing fully to any single reference. The restaurant space goes furthest: a rippled reflective metal ceiling catches circular halo pendants and brass bottle-display shelving in a distorted liquid surface, while a blue-veined stone counter anchors the bar in cooler, geological weight. Together the spaces make a credible case for theatrical density over architectural restraint.

"This New Yorker needed a hotel within walking distance to the Bell Centre to see Paul McCartney and i'm so glad i chose the W Montreal. The room was perfect and everything was brand new .Good breakfast in the dining room and the Vinyl bar was a lot of fun. The main reason i gave this W, 5 stars was the fantastic Chef Concierge MIREILLE who had a lot of patience with me during my 3 night stay. She helped me with walking directions to the Bell Centre and even helped me figure out how to book an uber to the airport. The whole front desk staff always greeted me with smiles when entering the W. If and when i do return to Montreal I will stay at this W . Thank You"

"Be careful when you book the room. They can assign you a tiny room without drawers, tight place to hanger clothes, no drawers and no space to keep your luggage. Attached pictures. When you claim to the hotel they mentioned that you got what you booked, of course nothing of that is in the website. All without saying that elevator has red lights and music aloud all the time. Bad service from the customer service department."

"My fiance and I stayed at the W hotel for a birthday getaway. We had stayed during the winter a few years ago and had a wonderful experience, so we figured we'd return. I'll go through each facet of the hotel: Check-In & Concierge: Smooth, the front desk team is super friendly, polite and helpful, which I think makes a difference. My fiance's family works within Marriott, so was slightly disappointed that we did not get offered an upgraded room (we did last time), but alas, a nice room nonetheless. The Room: We stayed in one of the "Mega" Suites - decently sized, with a large desk and chaise lounge. Full soaker tub and separate shower, which is nice. Toilet is also separated by a door. Only one sink though. The bathroom is also 'open concept', but there are curtains to close the bathroom off if you want privacy. The view was ..not great lol. Amenities: This is where W loses a lot of points, and brings my rating from a 5 to a 4. Some examples: - At concierge (or near the elevators), there used to be infused water (at least in 2023) - this is such a small touch that I think really adds to the experience of being at a higher end hotel. Since our last stay, they've replaced it with a filtered water system. It's...okay. Not cold. and seems impersonal. - The 'Gym': you can tell that it there was an intention to have it fully staffed at one point, but my sense is that it is not widely used, and as such they abandoned this plan. Regardless, there are guests still using it sporadically, and it should be stocked accordingly. There were no cups by the water machine, and the cleaning wipes for equipment was empty. - Room Amenities / Cleaning: The clock was wrong and had not been adjusted for daylight savings. We started off with 2 robes..for whatever reason the cleaning staff took one away and didn't replace it one of the days. One day another cleaning staff left a dirty cleaning cloth in the bathroom lol. There was an inadequate amount of larger towels. They didn't replace my shower cap. Again, it's not like this is completely necessary, but I think it takes away from that 'higher end' experience. I think there's just a lack of attention to detail. - Gaming Room: We never used it, it is pretty small and you have to pay for use (but apparently drinks/food included). Location: The major plus of this hotel is how close you are to old montreal. Literally steps away. 10 min walk away from the train station. 15 min walk away from the Eaton Centre and you can take the underground path (which the concierge was very helpful in giving us navigation instructions!) So here's what I'll say overall - if you're looking for a hotel that has a strong location with decent rooms, then this is an ideal hotel. If you are looking for a hotel experience, then look else where. The lack of attention to detail has me wondering if there's been a management change, and is worthy of addressing."

"During our 5 days at this hotel, the (only) elevator for entrance into the hotel for a wheelchair would not work. It would go down, but not up. So for our ENTIRE visit, my son could not get back into the hotel, without them dragging out a hideous long ramp 8 or 9 feet long to go up the 5 or 6 steps, that he had to try to get up in his motorized wheelchair with a couple of people pushing it along. It was incredibly inconvenient, and I also question its safety. Because of the location of the revolving door, it was difficult to get the wheelchair aligned to start up the ramp. I can understand that any hotel could have a problem, and after he was trapped in that contraption upon our arrival, we were told it would be fixed. But we had to deal with this our entire visit. It was still not fixed when we left. I certainly expected better service from a hotel of this caliber. At the very least there should have been a hotel manager involved daily in resolving the problem. We had 4 rooms reserved for our family of 10. Sorry, W Montreal, you will not see us in your hotel again. This speaks volume about your service to customers."
