PB hotel design editorial

Three thousand live plants, a wall of Eramosa limestone, and enough reclaimed elm to suggest a forest rather than a hotel lobby — these were the choices Rockwell Group made when they transformed the former Thompson Hotel Toronto into 1 Hotel Toronto in 2021, establishing Canada's first outpost of SH Hotels & Resorts' sustainability-driven brand. The ten-floor, 112-room building at 550 Wellington Street West in King West Village was already a neighbourhood anchor; what changed was its soul, reoriented entirely around biophilic principles and the ecological character of the Ontario landscape. The rooms carry this ethos through to the upper floors, where live-edge wood bed frames and woven rattan pendants sit against wide-plank oak flooring and sheer linen drapes that diffuse the city light into something softer. Leather poufs, raw log side tables, and chunky cable-knit throws give the spaces the atmosphere of a well-considered cabin rather than a conventional hotel room. Below, the restaurant Kitchen Toronto grounds its dining room in studded leather pendant lights and walnut communal tables framed by steel-and-glass partitions, while the rooftop pool frames the CN Tower and downtown skyline with an unguarded directness that feels genuinely earned. The design throughout resists the usual hospitality polish in favour of texture, materiality, and a quiet argument that luxury and ecological accountability need not pull in opposite directions.

"Our three nights at 1 Hotel Toronto in early August exceeded our expectations! Most importantly, every team member we encountered was not only pleasant but did their utmost to make our stay special. The rooms are beautifully done and are as shown on their website. The bathrooms are large, and the Bamford toiletries smell wonderful. The Nespresso coffee and tea service in the room was much appreciated. The gym was surprisingly large with lots of equipment. We used the Flora Lounge for cocktails and to linger during the day. It is like a large and beautiful living room. Our breakfast at 1 Kitchen was tasty. We looked at other major “grande dame” hotels but wanted a more boutique experience and suspected that this neighborhood was livelier. We were extremely happy with our choice. You can get to all the major museums and downtown easily, but we loved being close to the Queen Street West and Kensington Market neighborhoods with their wonderful restaurants and independent shops. The one hiccup we had: noisy neighbors who argued loudly into the wee hours. The hotel staff was very responsive that night, repeatedly asking them to be quiet, and the next day moved us into an upgraded room. For future visits, we will avoid rooms with an adjoining door, which made it easier to hear them. That said, the noise came from guests, not the hotel itself. Everyone we encountered the next day wanted to do what they could to help us. We were sad to depart and can’t wait to return (and try other 1 Hotel locations)."

The room was spotless, comfortable, and well-maintained, with everything I needed for a couple of days of work in the city . "There wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this hotel. Well, my husband didn’t like the lamp that hung over a table by the couch. He hit his head on it when standing up. We were in a Studio Suite with a soaker tub. It was a beautiful room and bathroom. The staff was very welcoming in a sincere way. The bar and restaurant were very good. The location was in the middle of lots of music and restaurants. Very walkable. I would stay again."

"I recently stayed at 1 Hotel Toronto with my friend to celebrate her birthday! It was our first time in Toronto and our experience was made so much better due to the incredible people at the 1. Camila was responsive and helpful for all pre-arrival communications. Robin, greeted us with a smile every single time we entered the hotel! After our first night Juliana made sure to ask us how our concert experience was. Each evening when we returned we were kindly greeted by Shemar and he had wonderful recommendations for us. Every single staff member was warm and made the hotel feel like home! I could not recommend the 1 Hotel Toronto more!"
