PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Hazelton Avenue and Yorkville's most animated pedestrian stretch, a curved red-brick base rises through three floors of late-Victorian commercial vernacular before giving way to nine upper storeys of limestone-clad contemporary construction — a studied act of urban continuity that defines the Hazelton Hotel's relationship to one of Toronto's most architecturally self-conscious neighbourhoods. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and completed in 2007, the 77-room property threads heritage massing at street level into a quietly confident residential tower above, its terraced upper floors planted with greenery that softens the transition between old and new. Inside, Yabu Pushelberg's interiors strike a tone that is closer to well-appointed private residence than trophy hotel. Guest rooms are finished in layered taupe and warm grey, with tall panelled headboards in wrapped leather, brass-detailed nightstands, and a palette that shifts between amber and sage depending on the seating — sculptural swivel chairs in sage velvet alongside paired armchairs in cognac leather, both reading against hatch-weave carpet in charcoal and silver. The bar draws on a more theatrical register: green-veined marble countertops, a black-and-white diamond-patterned stone floor, and red leather barstools anchored against dark-stained timber shelving. Below grade, the spa pool is lined in patterned aqua mosaic tile, its walls clad entirely in split-face marble — an effect that manages to feel grotto-like and composed at once.

"I had such an incredible stay at The Hazelton and was being treated to a luxury experience from the moment I arrived. I’m over eight months pregnant and have been dealing with quite a bit of discomfort lately, so comfort was especially important to me. I left feeling completely relaxed and refreshed. The room was immaculate, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and I absolutely loved their pillow service. I had actually forgotten my pregnancy pillow, and they were able to provide me with a full-body pillow, which made such a difference and was such a thoughtful touch. The saltwater pool was another highlight. Being this far along in pregnancy, getting into the pool was so relaxing and helped relieve so much pressure and discomfort. It was exactly what I needed. The location in Yorkville is also amazing, with so many wonderful restaurants and shops just steps away. Everything about the hotel—from the cleanliness and amenities to the service and attention to detail are truly luxurious. The Hazelton made me feel incredibly comfortable and taken care of during a time when that means so much. The level of luxury was exceptional, and I would absolutely stay here again. Such a beautiful experience!"

"The Hazelton is hands-down the best city hotel I’ve stayed in. We were upgraded to a suite that exceeded every expectation — beautifully appointed, spacious, and the kind of detail that makes a stay memorable. The location in Yorkville is a real highlight — such a leafy, elegant pocket of the city, quiet yet close to everything. Dinner at ONE was divine; easily one of the best hotel restaurant experiences we’ve had. From the room to the neighborhood to the food, everything about this stay was outstanding. Already counting down to our next visit."

"We spent four wonderful days at The Hazelton Hotel, and from the moment we arrived until our departure today, we could not have been more satisfied with our experience. The attention to detail, the kindness and professionalism of the entire team, the helpful recommendations, and the quality of both the restaurant and our room were outstanding. A special thank you to Kateryna for her warm and friendly welcome every day, as well as to the entire front desk team. Our thanks also go particularly to Victoria, as well as to Germain and Toni at the concierge desk, for their excellent recommendations and advice. At the restaurant, a very special thank you to Emir and Jeff, who made our breakfasts such an enjoyable part of each day. Thank you to the whole team for making our stay in Toronto so memorable. We would be delighted to return!"
