PB hotel design editorial

At the base of a cantilevered glass podium on Wellington Street West, where Toronto's Financial District bleeds into the Entertainment District, the drama is architectural before it is anything else. The Ritz-Carlton Toronto opened in 2011 as part of the broader LEAD mixed-use development by Zeidler Partnership Architects, its lower hotel floors wrapped in a boldly projected curtain-wall structure whose mirrored glazing throws back reflections of the city's older masonry buildings — a sharp collision between eras that gives the streetscape an almost cinematic charge. Inside, the 267 rooms and suites carry a palette that moves between warm walnut millwork and deep chocolate leather wall panelling, with custom abstract-patterned rugs in slate blue and stone anchoring the more generously proportioned upper-floor accommodations. Gold-legged furnishings and marble-topped writing surfaces appear throughout, establishing a register that is corporate in discipline but residential in warmth. The elevated indoor pool deck is perhaps the most memorable spatial experience the property offers — floor-to-ceiling glazing frames an unobstructed sightline to the CN Tower, the surrounding city arrayed below in a view that few Toronto hotel amenities can match. The terrace restaurant, shaded by a louvred pergola and softened with climbing greenery, manages a convincing garden atmosphere at several storeys above street level.

"My wife and I stay at many Ritz Carltons. The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto is one of our favorites. Our top floor corner suite on the Club Level was very clean and quiet. The Club Level food and service were great. Max, Olga and Natalia were so accommodating at the Club Lounge. The hotel restaurants were excellent. There is a lot to do in Toronto. We highly recommend the Ritz Carlton, Toronto as a great hotel to stay at. We will go back next year."

"The thing that makes the Ritz Carlton Toronto special is the people and the quality of care and service. In my overnight stay for business travel , I was thankful to experience two acts of kindness by the wonderful staff. The young gentleman with wavy hair at the front desk went above and beyond to fix a handle on my luggage that Porter airlines had broken when doing a gate check. He took it upon himself to find the right screw and put it back together while I was at the conference, for which I was so appreciative. Secondly, as I was leaving and about to call a cab to Billy Bishop, Paul a house man, offered to take me to the airport. I must have looked to be in a rush, as he was caring and expedient. Thank you again for making each guest feel seen and cared for"

"I had an excellent experience during our little staycation at the Ritz Carlton. We celebrated our anniversary and they did a great job in assisting my boyfriend with extra little decorations for our room. The rooms were impeccably clean, beautifully designed, and very comfortable. Prior to check-in, we visited the on site coffee shop and enjoyed a chicken sandwich, which was outstanding. Overall, the service and amenities exceeded expectations. I would gladly return and highly recommend this property to others."

"We had an absolutely fabulous stay and I cannot recommend the Ritz-Carlton in Toronto enough. The location was great of course, but their staff’s attention to detail was incredible! We went with our two little ones and they had a hard time reaching the sink, but we thought no problem and brought one of the chairs over. The next day after our room was cleaned a step stool magically appeared for them. We didn’t ask for it, they just saw a need and fulfilled it. I had tried to DoorDash two pool floats for my girls and they never arrived. The app said they had, so the staff not only helped us look but when it was clear they weren’t there they left us a sweet note with treats in our room letting us know that they have floats for us whenever we want them. These are two examples of many ways they went out of their way to make us feel cared for. We will 100% stay here again. Thank you!!"

"Lovely hotel. Perfect location less than 10 mins walk from union station. Had a club level corner room which was well worth the extra money for the club level food/drinks. Had one issue which was immediately addressed/resolved by speaking to the manager. Thanks for a great stay."
