PB hotel design editorial

Placed at the corner of Wellington and Blue Jays Way in Toronto's Entertainment District, the building that houses The SoHo Hotel & Residences is a study in the mixed-use ambitions that reshaped downtown Toronto in the early 2000s. The 34-storey tower, completed in 2000, stacks hotel rooms below a tower of private residences — a format that was still relatively novel for Canadian hospitality at the time. The facade, visible in the exterior image at dusk, presents as a disciplined curtain-wall grid in warm limestone-toned precast and dark glass, its horizontal banding giving the building a composed, corporate-modern character that fits comfortably within the district's institutional grain. Inside, the 92 hotel suites lean into a restrained urban palette — charcoal carpet, warm oak millwork, grey bouclé seating, and floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the downtown skyline directly into the room. The suite configurations allow for sliding glass partitions separating bedroom from living area, a practical intelligence that suits the extended-stay traveller the hotel has always attracted. Photography and framed art give the corridors and suites a considered residential quality rather than the anonymous finish common to corporate towers of the same era. The restaurant space, with its black steel-framed pass-through window onto a stone pizza oven, marble counter, and pendant industrial lighting, has the atmosphere of a serious neighbourhood trattoria. The spa pool, lined in white ceramic tile with glass-block walls admitting diffused light, completes a property that has always prioritised quiet competence over spectacle.

"Great location with a lovely spacious room. The staff at reception were really helpful and friendly. It's a great location, easy to walk to all the major sights. Particularly enjoyed having a separate dressing area from the bedroom, and soaking tub was a great way to unwind after a day's sightseeing. Lots of good coffee places and restaurants within easy walking distance. Woudl stay again"

"Great location, excellent room and wonderful experience! Location is in the heart of everything and at the same time, on a quiet part of Wellington so it doesn't feel crowded and overwhelming. It was exceptionally cold during my stay and so appreciated being within walking distance of places like The Well or the fact that everything was a short ride away. Would love to come back during the summer months as this is a great place to explore the city from."

"First time in my life that I stay at a hotel and they don’t make up the room. A two-night stay and, even though I complained, they didn’t care and still didn’t clean it despite my request. The sauna didn’t work in the middle of winter, which was the amenity that made me choose this hotel. At the hotel restaurant, there was absolutely no minimum level of customer service. In summary, the overall service experience was terrible."

"Even though I unfortunately couldn’t stay at Soho Hotel due to a severe snowstorm in Canada, I still want to leave a review—because the service and professionalism I received deserve recognition. From the very beginning, the team member I dealt with was extremely professional, proactive, and genuinely customer-oriented. They immediately understood the situation, handled everything with the right tone, and worked with me to reorganize the stay in the best possible way, taking into account the unexpected circumstances. In the end, I had to cancel my entire trip, but the support I received made a stressful situation much easier to manage. The only suggestion I would make is to introduce a WhatsApp customer service option. Many guests use it daily, and it would allow faster, more direct communication without relying only on email—especially when travel disruptions happen. Even without staying on property, I can confidently recommend Soho Hotel for its great service mindset, strong value for money, and central Toronto location."

"Large sized room for a city centre hotel. Super bath room and Molton Brown toiletries. Staff were efficient and great location with lots on your door stop. Beware taxes when you check out! Added an additional x5 taxes equating to over 20% of the room cost making it very expensive for what it was"
