PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Bay and Adelaide in Toronto's Financial District, a 58-storey tower designed by Hanrahan Meyers Architects rises in a tapered glass-and-granite form that signals corporate ambition before it suggests hospitality. The St. Regis Toronto, which opened in 2012 within the lower floors of this mixed-use skyscraper, holds 258 rooms and suites — the hotel's territory distinguished from the residential and office floors above by a limestone-clad base and the canopied porte-cochère visible at street level. Inside, Yabu Pushelberg's interiors move between two registers: the guest rooms carry a quietly assured residential tone, with leather headboards in warm taupe, brass-detailed millwork, patterned wool carpets in blue and grey, and window seats positioned to frame the Financial District skyline at sunset. A second, more theatrically inclined mode surfaces in the bar, where a swirling ceiling mural in amber and sienna anchors a room furnished with dark barrel chairs, croc-embossed lacquer tables, and a backlit spirits wall that climbs nearly to the cornice. The spa floor — set high enough to clear the surrounding mid-rise buildings — houses a lap pool flanked by bookmatched Calacatta marble panels, the stone's veining mirrored across each pair in a symmetry that gives the otherwise spare space its single moment of grandeur. Brass hardware and dark porcelain tile carry the material language through without interruption.

"Our two night stay at the St. Regis was exceptional in every way! I was a little hesitant based on spotty reviews on here, but the service was by far the best I’ve experienced anywhere. The staff throughout the hotel went above and beyond to make us feel valued and special. From bottles of wine and special gifts left in our room, to above and beyond service at the onsite bars and restaurants, we were treated like royalty. We stayed in the grand deluxe suite and were thrilled by both the size and quality of our room. Everything about our stay was spectacular. Highly recommended!!!"

"I've stayed here 30+ times and today was my last stay. We have multiple friends staying in multiple rooms and we all had the delight of getting woken up by the sounds of hammering and drilling into concrete - at 6am!!! Turns out we each called down to the front desk to inquire and were both told it is the building next door - we insisted it isn't since the sound was so obvious, and eventually my friend got dressed and went down to the lobby where they admitted it was building engineering and they asked them to stop. They stopped for an hour and then started up again - I called once again and they then again asked them to stop. I asked the manager what the hotel's policy is as to when trades are allowed to start, they said they don't have a policy but "usually they don't start until after 10am." For a hotel of this calibre (and price point) this is completely unacceptable, from the initial event to the gas lighting us to then it recurring and then management basically shrugging and saying tough luck. I also asked whether they'd be back tomorrow - management said they don't know. Total farce. Go to the Ritz or FS or any of the other top tier hotels in town that still care about customer service and comfort at $700+ a night."

"My girlfriend and I spent a couple nights here as a staycation. We stayed in a Deluxe Suite. Overall it was pleasant but I feel they’ve missed the mark on a “luxury” experience. - The room is pretty bland, with some large bare walls that could really use some art. In fact, there was no art anywhere except the bathrooms. - The pantry minibar and fridge minibar are both really bare - Wine glasses in the room are small and very cheap. I’m not asking for Zaltos but a glass that costs more than $2 would’ve been nicer - There was no corkscrew in the room. When I requested a corkscrew, they brought some dinky knife/bottle opener that didn’t have a screw. I called back and they brought a proper corkscrew but even that was pretty cheap feeling. - Room service was meh. The burger was a bit overcooked (but quite flavourful) and the club sandwich was nothing special, and the bread for it was like basic Dempsters bread. Fries were great, though. I was tempted by the buffalo wings, but the photo on the room service app showed about 4-5 wings for $35… Add all this together, while not one of them is fatal, there is not a true feeling of luxury. On the bright side - the room is spacious and cozy; the bed is among the most comfortable I’ve slept it (and the overall quality of sleep here was excellent - we didn’t hear *any* hallway noise from our bedroom); the bathroom and shower are fantastic; and the room is all in good condition."

"One of the worst experiences we’ve ever had. We were charged over $1,000 for a New Year’s Eve event that was completely misleading and did not match what was advertised. There was no DJ, no live jazz, and the event was extremely poorly organized. Music was played from a laptop, and unbelievably, the countdown happened after midnight. Even more serious: we were served expired food, and despite clearly informing staff about food allergies, this was ignored. As a result, we suffered food poisoning. This is a serious health and safety violation. We feel scammed and deeply disappointed. We are seeking a full refund and compensation for this unacceptable experience. I strongly advise others to think twice before booking events here."
