PB hotel design editorial

Coal Harbour's transition from industrial waterfront to Vancouver's most polished residential district found an apt companion when the Loden Hotel arrived on Melville Street in 2008. The 77-room property, designed by GBL Architects with interiors by Robert Ledingham, set out to offer something downtown Vancouver largely lacked at the time: a genuinely independent hotel with the material ambition of a boutique property and the operational ease of a larger one. The curtain-wall glazing visible on the upper floors gives rooms corner-wrapping views across the dense residential towers of the West End, floor-to-ceiling glass pulling the city skyline directly into guest rooms furnished with dark leather bed frames, warm walnut-toned wall paneling, patterned wool carpeting in tan and charcoal, and amber glass table lamps that soften the effect considerably. The lobby is where the design conveys most of its intention. A dramatically veined onyx fireplace surround anchors the room, its striated grey and brown banding catching candlelight from the firebox below. The images show two distinct phases of the lobby's life — an earlier arrangement with tufted ottomans, sapphire blue rugs, and leather club chairs, and a later, more resolved iteration with low sectional seating in taupe velvet, ring pendant lighting, and a wood-clad ceiling that deepens the atmosphere toward something closer to a Pacific Northwest lodge than a conventional urban hotel. The transition reveals a property that has kept editing itself toward a clearer identity.

"This is a very special hotel and quite unique with its incredible attention to detail and desire to meet the needs of their clients including us! Our room was amazing and wonderfully decorated and totally comfortable. This is our second time there and stayed in the Park Vista room the first time then we stayed in the room with a patio and pond (Mr. and Mrs. Mallard often parked there) which was amazing. The location near Stanley Park and the Seawall walk was great. A shout out to our customer relations manager Stanislav whose positive never ending energy made this a great personal experience for us. If you get the chance to experience a truly special hotel pick the Loden Hotel."

"We had a great experience staying at the Loden hotel in May 2026. Location is excellent but better yet is the very accomodating and dedicated staff who were there to offer advice, assistance and excellent service."

"The Loden Hotel is a 77 room boutique hotel sitting squarely in Coal Harbour. I'm about to list a plethora of great things about the hotel, but, at the same time I can't recommend it. Read on to find out or just skip to the bottom. The Good: So first of all, let's mention the staff. The staff are wonderful here. Could not have been more helpful, friendly, or supportive. Again, absolutely amazing. A full five stars in this department. We received two handwritten notes from the VP and a bottle of Champagne as a welcome. The snacks as mentioned by other reviewers, are top notch, from luxurious chocolates, to nuts, to premium bottles of water. There is a turn-down service every night and they refill the coffee maker with water, and include a jug of fresh water for you. Bath Toiletries are Molten Brown, which, I have to admit are my favorite brand. The gym is well equipped, including Pelotons, yoga mats, free weights and a punching bag! The location is perfect, a 15 min walk to Canada Line but only a 5 min walk to the Expo Line, just down the street from Canada Place. Walking to Robson is convenient and easy. So whats the problem? This is a 2025 Michelin Star hotel. As such, it needs something extra, something special, something to make it stand out. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the je ne sais quoi, especially for the price point. You see, the rooms lacking in some key areas, for what you pay. The size of our corner room was 385 square feet, on the smaller side, and lacking amenities. The small, 35 inch TV, you can't cast anything from your phone. Power outlets are minimal, in fact, we couldn't even find ONE convenient one in the entire hotel room. Bath amenities were lacking, with no toothbruth or comb. Finally, I've stayed at over 500 hotels in the last four years and this is the first hotel I've come across in this time frame with no iron in the room? (Canada Law maybe?) At this price point, or actually, even cheaper, you are better off at the Metropolitan or the Sutton Place, both of which I have stayed at with both rooms being superior to what I had at Loden, at a cheaper price point."

"Excellent hotel with outstanding service. My wife and I have spent the last 70 years (combined), in the hotel business and can honestly say, the service at this hotel is one to be admired. In addition the quality of the hotel construction and design is excellent. We continue to travel for leisure after retiring and will make sure the Loden is our home away from home when visiting Vancouver."
