PB hotel design editorial

That deep copper-red facade — a rain-screen cladding system that shifts tone from burgundy to bronze depending on the light — announced a new architectural register for Vancouver's Yaletown when the Douglas, Autograph Collection opened in 2019 adjacent to BC Place stadium. Designed by local firm GBL Architects, the 188-room tower rises 22 storeys from a sculpted podium whose curved glazed base softens what might otherwise be an imposing street presence. The building's position within the Parq Vancouver entertainment complex gave the design team an unusual brief: create a hotel that feels genuinely residential and locally rooted within a structure that is inseparably tied to casino infrastructure and arena crowds. Dialogue Studio handled the interiors, threading a Pacific Northwest material sensibility through spaces that could easily have defaulted to generic luxury. Exposed board-formed concrete ceilings appear throughout the guestrooms — visible in the images as raw, textured soffits that give the rooms an almost loft-like atmosphere — offset by walnut bed frames, brass side tables with organic branching legs, and geometric diamond-pattern rugs in charcoal, blush, and slate. Tartan throw blankets at the foot of each bed quietly nod to British Columbia's Scottish settler history without leaning into kitsch. The restaurant level shifts registers entirely: emerald leather banquettes, a slatted dark-timber ceiling, and geometric wire pendant lights carry the food and beverage spaces closer to a polished supper-club mood, while the sports bar below grounds the property firmly in its stadium-adjacent context.

"This hotel is absolutely beautiful, and I would highly recommend it for its location and the quality of the rooms. The property itself exceeded expectations. Unfortunately, my experience with management and the accounting team was extremely disappointing. I would strongly encourage guests to carefully monitor their credit card statements. I was charged $709 that the staff has been unable to properly explain or account for from my stay at the end of January. As of February 19th, I still have not been reimbursed. I prepaid for the room before arriving, so there should have been no additional charges placed on my card. The lack of resolution and accountability has been very frustrating. While the hotel itself is lovely, the billing issues significantly impacted my overall experience."

"Stay at the Douglas was exceptional. Posh accommodations in a lively location. Room was spotless and clean. Grace E with housekeeping must have noticed I was running low on toothpaste so she left me a nice note and a small replacement to top me up. Despite the hustle bustle below from the street, room was pretty quiet too and comfortable beds. Otto and Leo at the concierge were also incredibly helpful and ever accommodating. They had many recommendations for breakfast, dinner and excursions which were all top notch. I was even out busy exploring and needed to move a dinner reservation--I simply made a simple text and they took care of it immediately and seamlessly. Also indulged in a bit of room service. Not sure what the hotel does to their hash brown potatoes but some of the tastiest I have had! The hotel in general is also ideally located. Just steps from Plaza of Nations where you can catch an aqua bus to take you to Granville Island (or other stops) and steps from the rest of Yaletown too which has all sorts of nice restaurants. The Victor restaurant attached to the hotel is also quite good along with a cute gelato place (Passione Gelato). Would definitely stay there again if I am in Vancouver!"

"The hotel itself was very beautiful and cozy however what really ultimately made our experience for my mom and I was Kyna at the front desk. Exceptional service, coming from the hospitality industry she sincerely made our stay. Thank you so very much Kyna!"

"This hotel has great style but it comes at a price of being uncomfortable and impractical. There is not enough room for clothes and luggage. The provision of a yeti cooler instead of a refrigerator is not practical or preferable. The provision of 2 pencils and a tiny pencil sharpener instead of a pen is useless if cv you want to write somewhere outside the room or in ink. They only provide 2 small sheets of note sized paper which dont last long. The desk looks great but has no drawers so it is a magnet for travel clutter. The desk chair looks great but is not adjusting or on rollers and is too low for effective use at the desk. All in all, the design is unique but not practical. Staff were helpful and get a higher rating than the room"

"It is located in the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver and next to the BC Place Stadium. My friend and I were in town for Pokemon Go City Safari. At check in, we were offered a pre-arrival drink (Kombucha or bottle of water). Rooms were very nice and the beds were comfortable."
