PB hotel design editorial

Francis Rattenbury's 1908 commission for the Canadian Pacific Railway produced one of the most recognisable silhouettes in North American hospitality — a Châteauesque pile of warm brick and steep copper-clad gables that anchors Victoria's Inner Harbour with the conviction of a building that was always meant to define its city. The Fairmont Empress has grown considerably since that opening, with wings added through 1910 and 1929 bringing the total to 464 rooms across six floors, the whole mass sitting on a foundation of concrete poured over what was once a tidal mudflat — a feat of Edwardian engineering that required thousands of wooden piles driven into the harbour bed. A CAD$60 million renovation completed in 2017 by Toronto-based interior design firm Arcadis refreshed the property without loosening its grip on ceremony. The guest rooms now carry a palette of warm grey and deep aubergine, Murano-style bronze chandeliers catching the gold trim on dark-stained platform beds, while watercolour rose prints nod to Victoria's reputation as a garden city. The Lobby Lounge — where afternoon tea has been served since 1908 — retains its Corinthian columns and elaborate plasterwork ceiling, Thonet-style bentwood chairs and curved velvet sofas arranged beneath drum pendant lights in a room that earns its ritual without any sense of museum-piece stiffness. The pool pavilion takes a sharper turn, exposed steel trusses and travertine-clad walls framing a mountain mosaic that grounds the space in the Pacific Northwest landscape just outside the windows.

"We had a banquets early in the morning at the Empress recently. No pun intended but i was not impressed. Our lady server (Jasmine) acted very rude and her attitude was just off for the establishment's standards and the prices we were paying. We saw her carry oatmeal bowls with her fingers in. I noticed one of her co-waiter let her know about it but she brushed it off with sassiness like it was nothing and continued the service the same uneloquent way."

"We upgraded to a Harbour View Queen. Whilst we did have a view of the harbour the room and bathroom was disappointingly small. We have stayed in Fairmont Hotels before and I would agree with others who say it needs a refurb/refreshment generally."

"Third time we walked through the facility it’s very beautiful and clean. The plating and dishes of tea were a pretty amazing. We did not stay for that but just walked through"

"Fabulous, lived up to its reputation in every way! Great room, great view of harbour. Central location to everything. Beautiful gardens. Cocktail bar was great & staff mixed fantastic cocktails with panache! Thoroughly recommend staying here or just book for afternoon tea."

"This is a beautiful building, and the flower planting is outstanding in Spring. It is expensive and our room was small but well kept and quiet. All the staff we interacted with were helpful and friendly. We opted for afternoon tea, which was a tad disappointing, because it was noisy in that area- I am comparing it to the Ritz in London, though. The only thing that was odd was breakfast and asking us for a reservation, but I guess that is because people can book from outside."
