PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as a deliberate extension of the Canadian Pacific château tradition — the same steep copper-green rooflines and turreted silhouette that define Banff Springs and the Château Frontenac — the Fairmont Chateau Whistler was designed by Ellerbe Becket and opened in 1989 at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain, with a further tower addition completed in 1997 bringing the property to 539 rooms across twelve storeys. The massing, visible in the exterior image against a deep winter dusk, deploys that familiar vocabulary of stepped gables, dormered peaks, and a warm sand-coloured facade that glows against the surrounding snowpack with almost theatrical effect — less alpine vernacular than Canadian railway romanticism transplanted to the Coast Mountains. Inside, the property navigates the tension between that grand historicist envelope and a more contemporary mountain sensibility with varying degrees of success. Renovated guest rooms show the more resolved version of this: live-edge walnut headboards with natural slab detailing anchor one category, forest-green upholstered headboards with geometric patterned carpets another, both drawing on Pacific Northwest materiality without resorting to rustic cliché. The Wildflower restaurant maintains an older, warmer register — river-stone fireplace surround, glazed walnut cabinetry, woven rattan dining chairs beneath fabric pendant lanterns — that carries genuine lodge atmosphere. The spa's indoor mineral pool, framed by full-height glazing opening to the outdoor terrace, brings the tree canopy directly into the building's most restorative space.

"What a gorgeous hotel with wonderful friendly staff! We stayed for two nights at the end of a busy 3 week holiday, touring around Canada and the location and comfort made for a relaxed few days before we flew home. We were upgraded to a spacious room on the 8th floor , which was perfect for us to finish packing up our cases . We did have a plumbing issue on our last morning when our wash basin was filled with disgusting black water, but Lia on reception desk dealt with it all efficiently, providing us with another room to use for a few hours and allowing a later check out. Great pool facilities and so many fantastic walks from the doorstep!"

"We really enjoyed staying at the Fairmont Whistler. The location was awesome, and each staff member I met was very polite and professional. We decided to upgrade to Gold, and we found it well worth the upgrade. The room was large enough for our family to be comfortable, and the breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had. They always had a nice variety of items, and everything was just delicious! The rest of the day in the Gold lounge, they had plenty of snack items, and hors d’oeuvres were great after a long day on the slopes. Shuttle came often and was an easy ride into town and the Whistler gondola. Housekeeping did an amazing job stocking and tidying the room each day. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Fairmont Whistler and would love to return. Highly recommend upgrading to Gold."

"Great location , friendly and efficient staff, comfortable rooms and great breakfast and food. What’s not to like. It is a popular conference centre so bear that in mind if you don’t like busy places."
