PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as a deliberate extension of the Canadian Pacific château tradition — the same steep copper-green rooflines and turreted silhouette that define Banff Springs and the Château Frontenac — the Fairmont Chateau Whistler was designed by Ellerbe Becket and opened in 1989 at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain, with a further tower addition completed in 1997 bringing the property to 539 rooms across twelve storeys. The massing, visible in the exterior image against a deep winter dusk, deploys that familiar vocabulary of stepped gables, dormered peaks, and a warm sand-coloured facade that glows against the surrounding snowpack with almost theatrical effect — less alpine vernacular than Canadian railway romanticism transplanted to the Coast Mountains. Inside, the property navigates the tension between that grand historicist envelope and a more contemporary mountain sensibility with varying degrees of success. Renovated guest rooms show the more resolved version of this: live-edge walnut headboards with natural slab detailing anchor one category, forest-green upholstered headboards with geometric patterned carpets another, both drawing on Pacific Northwest materiality without resorting to rustic cliché. The Wildflower restaurant maintains an older, warmer register — river-stone fireplace surround, glazed walnut cabinetry, woven rattan dining chairs beneath fabric pendant lanterns — that carries genuine lodge atmosphere. The spa's indoor mineral pool, framed by full-height glazing opening to the outdoor terrace, brings the tree canopy directly into the building's most restorative space.

"While the property is extremely well located and the lobby is great, the service was simply lacking. We booked “gold Experience “rooms”. We had to repeatedly call to have a room made. They simply would not stock robes in the room and we had to call to get them. The valet situation the day we arrived was a complete mess. With no space to unload luggage and the valets initially unwilling to take the car. The food was maybe 4 out of 5, and the staff in the restaurants always had a good attitude. So basically an ok experience but the Gold experience did not justify the addtiinal cost"

"We were 2 couples that stayed at this Fairmont for 6 nights.. We have traveled to many destinations together and were so very impressed with this hotel. It is a well oiled , service oriented, outstanding hotel. Kudos to management as every single employee we encountered was courteous, friendly, and trained to make sure every aspect of your experience is pure perfection! The concierge Monica went above and beyond to ensure we had every reservation we wanted. She was amazing and you felt that she was so happy to assist us and truly excited when we were happy. Kyle was hilarious yet professional and made awesome recommendations.. It appears that these wonderful employees loved their jobs. We know that the Fairmont Whistler took our experience skiing the BC to a level I do t believe we have gotten anywhere in the world. To achieve this level of elegance without any stuffiness is truly remarkable ! We highly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to ski Whistler Blackcomb!"

"I just reviewed on google, and wanted to do it here too as we recently had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful Chateau in the mountains, and while everything about the property was wonderful, one person truly made our stay unforgettable. So we want to register very special thank you to AJ at the hotel front desk team. From the moment we arrived, he greeted us with such genuine warmth, professionalism, and kindness. He went far beyond what anyone would normally expect — patiently helping us with recommendations, making sure every detail of our stay was perfect, and always greeting us with a smile whenever we passed through the lobby. What really stood out was how much he truly cared about the guests’ experience. His attention to detail, calm professionalism, and sincere hospitality made us feel incredibly welcome and valued throughout our stay. It’s rare to meet someone who represents a hotel with such pride and dedication. Because of him, our visit became more than just a hotel stay — it became a memorable experience that we’ll always look back on fondly. Thank you again and again, AJ, for your outstanding service . The hotel is very lucky to have you, and we look forward to returning in the future!"
