PB hotel design editorial

At 2,400 metres above sea level, on the edge of one of the driest places on earth, the architectural logic of Awasi Atacama is essentially pre-Columbian: thick adobe walls the colour of oxidised terracotta, circular casitas topped with conical thatch, and a landscape strategy that treats the native algarrobo and chañar trees as structural elements rather than decoration. The property opened in 2007 with just eight villas, later expanding to sixteen, each one a separate round dwelling that draws directly from the vernacular building traditions of the Atacameño people who have inhabited this high desert plateau for millennia. Inside the casitas, the circular geometry frames everything — thatched ceilings rise to a central point above dark-stained timber beds, wicker trunk chests, and striped Andean textiles hung flat against the adobe walls like paintings. Painted wooden writing desks and rattan chairs sit on wide-plank dark floors, the palette drawn entirely from the landscape outside: dusty rose, ochre, olive, and the warm gold of dried paja grass. The communal spaces follow the same structural logic, rough-hewn carob wood posts supporting open thatched pavilions where linen sofas and kilim cushions gather around low tables. Turquoise-painted benches punctuate the stone-paved courtyards with a note of colour borrowed from the region's mining heritage, the pool terrace shaded by mature trees whose canopy the entire compound was designed around rather than through.

"This was an extraordinary experience - the highlights just kept coming! The hotel is beautiful and intimate, blending perfectly into the surroundings. The food and wines are exceptional, and the staff are unbelievably friendly, courteous, enthusiastic and attentive. Everything was just perfect and so well thought out. Every excursion was fantastic, though the trip to Tatio, the hike in the Cactus Valley, and the hike in the Moon Valley deserve special mention. We also loved the star-gazing. We were really lucky with our guide Christobal and our driver Chino, but had such amazingly helpful service - from Brian the manager, Cecile, Milla the sommelier, Elisabeth and Nuala in the restaurant, and lots of other people whose names we did not catch. The ratio of staff to guests is really impressive - and they all seem to work together really well. We stayed for six days and absolutely loved it."

"The Atacama desert is a very special place. The town of San Pedro is like a scene out of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Old, quaint with dirt streets. The resort was an oasis with trees and a U.S. southwestern vibe. The accommodations were lovely, well equipped and immaculate. The highlight of our trip was the Star Gazing activity which we did on our first night. Having the clearest skies in the world and the guidance of a professional astronomer was a particular delight. Very educational."

"Could not have picked a better place to spend some time on our trip. Everything - and I mean everything - was absolutely perfect. The villas are so beautifully appointed, the resort is quiet and so well-kept, the food is out of this world, and the staff are absolute gems of people. Our guide, Cote, made every day an unforgettable experience for us. We are so lucky to have been paired with her - she was beyond knowledgeable, passionate, professional and an all-around wonderful person."
