PB hotel design editorial

At 2,400 metres above sea level, on the edge of one of the driest places on earth, the architectural logic of Awasi Atacama is essentially pre-Columbian: thick adobe walls the colour of oxidised terracotta, circular casitas topped with conical thatch, and a landscape strategy that treats the native algarrobo and chañar trees as structural elements rather than decoration. The property opened in 2007 with just eight villas, later expanding to sixteen, each one a separate round dwelling that draws directly from the vernacular building traditions of the Atacameño people who have inhabited this high desert plateau for millennia. Inside the casitas, the circular geometry frames everything — thatched ceilings rise to a central point above dark-stained timber beds, wicker trunk chests, and striped Andean textiles hung flat against the adobe walls like paintings. Painted wooden writing desks and rattan chairs sit on wide-plank dark floors, the palette drawn entirely from the landscape outside: dusty rose, ochre, olive, and the warm gold of dried paja grass. The communal spaces follow the same structural logic, rough-hewn carob wood posts supporting open thatched pavilions where linen sofas and kilim cushions gather around low tables. Turquoise-painted benches punctuate the stone-paved courtyards with a note of colour borrowed from the region's mining heritage, the pool terrace shaded by mature trees whose canopy the entire compound was designed around rather than through.

Awasi Atacama Reviews

"I was expecting a lot from The Awasi resort given the cost of the stay and the fact that few guests rating it, gave it any thing but 5 stars. But Awasi delivers on all promises and then some. The ENTIRE staff is professional, courteous, helpful and dedicated to their guests having the best possible time in the Atacama desert The cuisine and service by the wait staff and sommeliers are exactly what you would expect at a 5-star resort. Our guide, Alejandro, was so knowledgeable, patient and helpful--if you go to Awasi, you should request him. Our room was so comfortable--you would never know you are in the desert! Awasi handles the big details very well but it’s in the little details, ie, calling guests by their names, personalized menus, always opening doors, seeing you off on your daily treks and greeting you upon return, changing flatware and glassware with each course at lunch and dinner, keeping all the outside fires going at night, one-time free laundry service--never had that happen before!--it’s in those ‘little things’ where Eduardo and his staff really shine. They represent their brand vey well. Awasi is the nicest hotel I have ever experienced. On a 5-star system, I would rate Awasi 5.5. Sublime"
