PB hotel design editorial

Against the burnt-sienna cliffs of the Quebrada de Chulacao, where eroded volcanic rock rises in near-vertical walls above the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, the low adobe structures of Alto Atacama Desert Lodge — now rebranded as Nayara Alto Atacama — seem less built than deposited by the landscape itself. Chilean architect Rodrigo Searle designed the property to follow the contours of an ancient river canyon, arranging its 42 rooms and suites in single-storey clusters that keep the roofline below the surrounding ridgeline. Rammed earth walls, river-stone detailing, and cane-thatched pergolas draw directly from the vernacular construction of the Atacameño people, lending the compound an organic coherence that no amount of imported material could replicate. Inside, the logic holds. Terracotta floor tiles run continuously from the guest corridors into the rooms themselves, grounded by dark timber headboards inlaid with cane strips and dressed in linen the colour of desert sand. The lounge at the heart of the property clusters low sofas upholstered in rough-woven textiles alongside wire bistro chairs, the bar hung with pendant lights fashioned from bundled dried grasses — a detail that manages to feel genuinely local rather than decoratively folkloric. The pool terrace, edged in rough-cut stone and framed by timber pergolas, keeps the eye moving toward the cliffs rather than inward toward the hotel, which is precisely the point.

"An absolutely incredible stay start to finish. The staff went above and beyond in so many ways to help make our stay comfortable and enjoyable- even going out of their way to help us order and find a couple of key things we forgot to bring for our littles. We can’t say enough good things about their head of customer experience, Eros. He truly cares- as does the rest of the staff. We were hoping it would be a good experience for our 3 very young children… and truly, it was everything we could have hoped for and more. They staffed our daily excursions with the kindest and most patient guides that clearly loved children- even adding additional guides for some to ensure the safety and comfort of all of us. The team was also completely flexible when we wanted to swap excursions or adjust our schedule due to worn-out children. They never overcrowd excursions like we heard some tour companies do in Atacama. And with so many excursion options, the pools and resort were calm and never overcrowded either despite the hotel being fully booked. You always had the option to have your own plunge pool… and they have a bar and food service right by the pools. We loved trying the pisco sours with rica rica, the local ice cream, and locally-inspired fish and corn soup. Our kids loved feeding the llamas Antonia and Franco as well.. again, an exceedingly kind staff member met us at the corrals on multiple days- without a previous plan- to let our boys pet and feed Antonia…inside the corral! For so many reasons, our boys didn’t want to leave. Breakfast was great- so many options on the buffet, mimosas, fresh juices that change daily, and a menu to order hot items. The restaurant was also nice- we did venture to town to La Casona as recommended by Eros and had a phenomenal meal… made me wish that they’d bring a few more local dishes to the restaurant! And the shuttle driver took us back early when our boys were overtired and losing it in town. We did the Mars Valley hike (and dune run!!), the short version of the cactus hike, Cejar Lagoon, the salt flats with the flamingos, and the sunset Ckamur tour.. all amazing and doable with kids. We would 100 percent make the trip back to do a few more tours at altitudes that were for older kids and up. I’d also say that the guests that this resort attracts are absolutely lovely. Just the most beautiful of locations, a serene and stunning resort, friendly and exceedingly helpful staff, and the most incredible of excursions."
