PB hotel design editorial

At the edge of Puerto Natales, where the Última Esperanza Sound stretches toward the snowfields of Torres del Paine, a century-old cold-storage and meat-processing plant once served as the industrial heart of Patagonian sheep farming. That building — a cluster of red-roofed brick warehouses dating to 1915, operated by the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego — was converted in 2011 into The Singular Patagonia, with Chilean architect Sebastián Irarrázaval responsible for the contemporary wing that extends the historic complex along the waterfront in board-formed concrete and full-height glazing. The collision between those two registers is what gives the hotel its particular atmosphere. Inside the heritage brick warehouses, the lobby and bar preserve the original industrial scale — exposed steel columns, double-height brick walls, polished concrete floors — furnished with leather wingback chairs, brass lanterns, red damask sofas, and antique display cabinets that suggest a well-traveled explorer's study rather than a museum recreation. The 57 rooms in the new wing are altogether quieter: board-marked concrete ceilings, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass that opens the Strait directly into the room, corduroy-upholstered armchairs in earthy browns, and framed archival photographs of the pier that sits, still largely intact, just beyond the terrace. The spa carries the same language — raw concrete, a lap pool framed entirely by water and cloud — completing an interior argument that respects industry without romanticizing it.

The Singular Patagonia, Puerto Bories Hotel Reviews

"Large hotel built into an old meat-packing plant, with lots of exposed equipment and information cards along cat walks leading to different areas. Comfortable, clean room, ample space in bathroom (but what was with the see-through door on the WC?), wall to wall window looking out at fjord. Furnished to suggest the era of the plan's heyday. Lots of stairs and walking--would not be easy for those with limited mobility. Complimentary shuttle to downtown Puerto Natales."

"This hotel is Willie Wonka meets Ritz Carlton meets Steampunk. Built around 1910 as a place where sheep were brought for slaughter, butcher and their hides tanned, the preserved structure has been transformed into a modern day luxury hotel. In fact, for a short time, this was a museum before being converted into a hotel. The machinery that enabled the cold storage is still present and pristine condition. The spaces are spectacular and make you feel as if you’re walking through another time in place. Kudos to the architects who maintained the integrity of the building and integrated all the elements needed for travelers to enjoy Patagonia. Our room had a million dollar view across the fjord and amenities included a large soaking tub, perfect after a hike. The bar and restaurants space is enormous with soaring ceiling heights, and all of the original architectural elements. It’s wherever the original Tannery was located. Breakfast is a buffet with eggs to order. Dinner was terrific and better than any of the two we had in town. And the space…wow… Last, service…. The staff was lovely. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Callouts to the concierge team who made restaurant suggestions and reservations."

"Amazing facility that is one of the most unique we’ve ever stayed in anywhere in the world. The service was awesome. The rooms were phenomenal…. And the view was breathtaking. We had amazing excursions with the fjords end navigation, as well as the eastern hiking excursion. We will be back. We would definitely recommend."
