PB hotel design editorial

Santiago's El Golf district — the financial quarter that Chileans sometimes call Sanhattan — has always demanded a particular kind of authority from its buildings, and the red brick and limestone facade of The Ritz-Carlton Santiago, rising fourteen floors above Avenida El Alcalde since 1997, delivers it with considerable conviction. The exterior, visible in these images after dark, presents the measured grammar of late postclassical hotel architecture: a deeply coffered porte-cochère in painted white timber, brass lanterns flanking richly grained mahogany entry doors, limestone pilasters giving the base a solidity that the red brick upper floors carry upward with real presence. The 205-room property was among the first internationally branded luxury hotels to establish itself in this corridor, and its architecture deliberately signals permanence in a neighborhood still finding its footing at the time of opening. Inside, two registers coexist without much tension. The whisky bar — all floor-to-ceiling walnut panelling, leather club chairs with brass nailhead trim, and black granite bartop — carries the atmosphere of a London members' club transplanted wholesale to the Southern Cone. The guest rooms, refreshed in a subsequent renovation, move somewhere more contemporary: teal grasscloth headwall panels framed in carved walnut screens, tufted leather bench footboards, rose-gold pendant clusters in copper-brushed metal, and mid-century inspired lounge chairs in warm walnut. The rooftop pool, sheltered beneath a barrel-vaulted glass and steel conservatory, is the property's most architecturally singular space — arched ribs in sand-coloured concrete spanning a lap pool flanked by rattan daybeds and potted palms.

"Staff are lovely but the hotel is tired and doesn’t live up to the name. Lobby staff are fantastic but the bar is understaffed and boring. Don’t bother with a spa treatment, it’s a pitiful excuse for a spa and the staff are not professional and not centred on you visit with them."

"The ritz has either gone down hill. the rooms are okay by hampton inn standards. The breakfast had a large spread but food was definitely low quality. Tried several of the bakery items and they were all stale or very dry. The croissants were very crunchy not soft or buttery. Service was abysmal."

"Our three night stay at the Ritz was overall very good. The room was overall to our liking with nice views over the city- however a couple of shortcomings in the bathroom- no hand held shower and only one sink. But otherwise a great room and bathroom . Staff were overall extremely welcoming and helpful. Excellent breakfast. I would recommend the hotel with one caveat. I’m removing one star solely due to the room AC being barely adequate and unable to cool below 20 C with outside temperatures being warm but not too hot- high of 90 F and low of 72. We complained but they were unable to fix it. Room was cooled ok but a few degrees warmer outside and it would have been a real problem."

"outstanding staff! Especially one concierge, Francisco arranged our trips, restaurant reservations, and transportation with a bubbly personality and a smile every day! I definitely recommend this hotel!"

"We stayed here both before and after our cruise. The location is very convenient, and the beds are comfortable. However, the hotel mainly caters to large groups and cruise travelers, which makes it feel quite busy and impersonal at times. Service at breakfast and in the restaurant can be slow, so be prepared for a bit of a wait. The hotel itself is somewhat dated and could benefit from renovations. I do want to give special mention to Christian and Christopher, the bellhops. They were absolutely outstanding—kind, helpful, and always welcoming. They truly made our long days much better with their warm and friendly service!"
