PB hotel design editorial

Rising forty-two floors above the dense commercial grid of Mong Kok — one of the most densely populated urban districts on earth — Cordis Hong Kong presents a particular design challenge: how to deliver a considered luxury interior within a tower whose surrounding neighbourhood trades almost entirely in neon and street-level noise. The hotel, which relaunched under the Cordis brand in 2016 after operating for years as the Langham Place Hotel, sits within a mixed-use development whose curved, silvered façade and aerodynamic crown give it an unmistakably early-2000s corporate ambition, the aluminium lattice pergola sheltering the upper pool deck doing its best to suggest something more architecturally nuanced than the base tower warrants. Inside, the rooms carry a palette of cool grey carpet, dark walnut joinery, and crisp white bedding, the floor-to-ceiling glazing doing the heavy lifting by framing views over Victoria Harbour and the Lion Rock ridgeline. The all-day dining space takes a lighter approach — herringbone oak flooring, vertical timber slat screens, canvas director's chairs on powder-coated black frames, and white dome pendants hanging at different heights — giving it an atmosphere closer to a Scandinavian brasserie than a conventional Hong Kong hotel restaurant. The rooftop pool, framed by interlocking white structural arches open to the sky, is the property's most resolved gesture: a long, mosaic-tiled lap pool flanked by cabanas and topiary standards, suspended high enough above Kowloon to make the city feel, briefly, very far away.

"My recent stay was honestly quite disappointing. To begin with, I am a Ruby Elite member. This was not acknowledged at all during my stay. We had a superior king booked but were provided with a queen bed. The fridge barely worked so we had to keep our children’s milk and yoghurts in the hotels fridge and call each time we needed something. During our rooftop swim, my daughter loves to jump into the deep end of the pool which is very brave for a 6yo and I encourage her to face her fears. I am very aware and considerate of others, so is my daughter, and we would always wait to jump in when no one is near us. We were told there was no diving or jumping into the water. This was not the case during our previous stay. The next day at the pool there were a rowdy bunch of non Asians all jumping in, and nothing was said to this group. The following day, an old Asian lady complained we were splashing around too much and interrupting her laps. There are no signs to advise rules such as jumping in and splashing around. The pool should be used for leisure, if people want to do laps, they should use a lap pool or otherwise tolerate and accept that it’s a shared pool for recreational purposes for all to enjoy. We should not have to move to one side so someone can use the whole length of the pool, which they choose to swim in the middle. This truly ruined our stay as the pool is the main reason we choose Cordis when we visit Hong Kong. We even convinced friends to stay at Cordis who were visiting HK during the same time as us. Upon check out I requested a late check out and they said I could stay till 2pm. I asked them to confirm my Brilliant status in which they finally did and approve my 4pm checkout with no apologies. I was not offered any Elite Welcome Amenities or advised of the Brilliant benefits during our stay. A very disappointing stay I’m sad to say."

"I want to take the opportunity to provide feedback on room attendant Ms Kamala. She was meticulous in keeping room 2727 spotless clean. Not only that, her level of attentiveness, professionalism and pride are the cornerstones of high-quality work. I can see that she is also a very observant person. During her routine housekeeping service, she noticed that I do use the shower head for shower but seemed having difficulty in reaching out to adjust the height of the shower head. On my second night of stay, I was pleasantly surprised that the height of the shower head was adjusted lower and that worked perfectly well for me. Good job Kamala."
