PB hotel design editorial

Conceived as a living laboratory for hospitality education, Hotel ICON in Tsim Sha Tsui East was designed from the outset with an unusual dual purpose — to operate as a genuine luxury hotel while serving as the teaching hotel of Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management. The building, completed in 2011, rises as a crisp curtain-walled tower whose lower podium is clad in warm bronze-toned vertical fins visible in the exterior image, the contrast between the terracotta base and the cooler blue-grey glass shaft above giving the massing a layered quality uncommon among Kowloon's commercial towers. The interiors were entrusted to a constellation of designers — Andre Fu, William Lim, and others — each assigned different spaces, a curatorial approach that gives the 262-room property genuine variety rather than the uniform hand of a single studio. The harbour-facing rooms deploy floor-to-ceiling glazing to draw Victoria Harbour directly into the field of vision, the macassar ebony and warm walnut millwork of the headboard walls calibrated to warm against the blue spectacle outside. The restaurant spaces read with similar material confidence — dark polished stone floors, bronze-framed partitions, and grey upholstered tub chairs arranged to keep the harbour view available from nearly every seat. The rooftop pool, edged in LED-lit coping and backed by a floor-to-ceiling glazed fitness pavilion with dramatically scaled cylindrical columns, gives the amenity floor an urban theatre that few comparable Kowloon properties have managed to achieve.

"I arrived early (just before noon) and was grateful to Eric, the desk manager, who went out of his way to find me a room. I needed the room to prepare for a meeting later that afternoon. The room, paid for by my work host, is luxurious. As a loyal Marriott Bomvoy member, I have to say that The Icon is up there with Marriott’s leading properties like the Ritz Carlton and the J.W. Marriott. Many room items are customized, including their amazingly comfortable bathrobe. Kudos!"

"I had a wonderful experience in GREEN. Jane was so nice and helpful. Kelvin Yeung’s drawing on the plate was so pretty and it looks like me!!"

"The restaurant has a great ambiance, and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. The main course, a double portion of steak, was originally for two people, but since we wanted to try other dishes, the staff kindly provided us with a single portion. The bread and free-flow white wine were both excellent 🥂 We celebrated birthday that night , and they provided us a dessert cake🍰 Kelvin, one of the staff, drew our faces on the plate, which was very thoughtful. We are having a good time, it’s a wonderful place to celebrate!"

"My recent stay at The Icon Hotel in Hong Kong was a genuinely enjoyable experience, and one I would gladly recommend to fellow travellers seeking a modern, well-located property in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui. I had booked a harbour-facing suite — the top category on offer — and I was certainly not disappointed. The views across the waterfront were breathtaking, and waking up to that vista each morning was a real highlight. The suite itself was generously proportioned, featuring a separate living area, a dedicated bedroom, a powder room, and a beautifully appointed main bathroom. The freestanding bathtub overlooking the harbour was an indulgent touch that I particularly appreciated. Breakfast at The Market restaurant on the second floor was a pleasant affair, with a good variety on offer. I didn’t get the chance to dine at the restaurant on the 23rd floor this time, though it’s certainly on my list for a return visit. What stood out: • The location in TST is excellent — well connected and close to everything • The hotel feels fresh and contemporary compared to many of its neighbours in the area • Housekeeping was attentive and consistent throughout my stay • A welcome bottle of wine upon arrival was a thoughtful and appreciated gesture • The overall service was warm and satisfactory A few areas for consideration: That said, for a booking at the highest suite tier, there were a handful of small but noticeable gaps that nudged the experience slightly away from true luxury: • Luggage assistance to and from the room was not offered — a standard expectation at this level • The bathroom amenity dispensers were fixed to the wall, which felt more in keeping with a mid-range property than a premium suite • No bottled water was provided; only a water dispenser, which required constant refilling • A morning newspaper delivered to the suite would have been a nice touch • Complimentary laundry, typically standard for top-tier suite guests, was not included These are, admittedly, relatively minor points — but it is often the finer details that distinguish a very good stay from a truly memorable luxury experience. I share these observations in the hope that the management receives them in the constructive spirit they are intended. Overall, The Icon Hotel is a strong property with a lot going for it, and I would not hesitate to return. A well-deserved 5 out of 5 — with every confidence that a little attention to the finer touches will make it even better."

"The hotel is located in a great location. Within walking distance to the train and sightseeing activities such as museums, shopping, and the waterfront. Lots of restaurants nearby. The check-in process was smooth and it was handled by Gordon who was friendly and efficient. The rooms were clean and spacious. It was well maintained by the housekeepers. The minibar was free and is restocked daily with items such as water, beer, and coconut water. The breakfast buffet was included and had a variety of food to accommodate most dietary restrictions. The gym had a great view of the pool and waterfront. The gym had a decent selection of options for cardio and resistance training. A couple of minor complaint is the elevators aren’t that fast and the shower isn’t fully enclosed. The shower doesn’t have a door and that results in water splashing outside of the shower."
