PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the lower slopes of Hong Kong Island where Sheung Wan gives way to the older, quieter grid of Sai Ying Pun, The Jervois was designed by André Fu — then still building his reputation before the Upper House and Fullerton Bay commissions cemented his standing — as a study in what compact luxury might look like when it refuses to apologize for its scale. The tower's glass curtain wall, visible in the night facade shot, turns each room into a lit diorama against the city, the dark-framed modules stacked with a precision that makes the building feel more like a well-edited residential block than a conventional hotel. Inside, Fu's interiors move between registers with confidence. The lobby arrives in olive-tinted lacquered panels and Arabescato marble flooring, black steel framing lending the check-in desk the geometry of a Minimalist sculpture. Guest rooms shift the mood entirely — pale oak floors and floor-to-ceiling glazing flood the spaces with Hong Kong's compressed skyline and the green shoulder of Victoria Peak beyond, while damask throws in deep red or burnt orange introduce warmth against grey lacquered headboards and white linen. The window-seat daybeds in corner rooms, upholstered in natural linen and wide enough to hold a tea tray, capture the building's central proposition: that a city this dense, observed from the right height and through the right frame, becomes its own amenity.

"We just spent two fantastic weeks at the Jervois. We started as a group of 3 adults in the two bedroom suite, and when our party size changed to 2 we had planned to move to another area of Hong Kong. However, the stay at The Jervois was so good we could not think of going anywhere else, so we changed to a 1 bedroom suite. The room sizes were so generous, in fact the 2 bedroom suite blew us away with its size and view. Having that spacious living area in the 2 bedroom suite to spread out in at the end of an exhausting day was so welcome. Proportionally the 1 bedroom suite living area was also generous. In both suites we also appreciated the cool design aesthetic, the table and seating for eating and working, generous couches, kitchens, (washing machine in the larger suite) and storage space to unpack our suitcases and store the empty cases away. Great bathrooms and comfy beds too. Plus we really enjoyed the outdoor rooftop. Both rooms had private entry from the elevator so we never heard another guest. The staff were fantastic, from reception staff to room-care staff. If we needed anything the service was so fast and friendly. We have to give special thanks to Angela, Herman, Tommy, Edwin and Joyce - they were all so kind and helpful and it felt like we were talking with friends every day. We highly recommend The Jervois."

"Second time staying during apartment renovation in HK. Great suite layout, design, and facilities (including top quality toiletries), great location, and fabulous staff, always friendly and helpful. Suites are very quiet and private, essentially one per elevator landing. The galley kitchen is useful if you don't want to eat out all the time. One small word of caution - bed is very comfortable but on the small side for queen size."
