PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels anywhere carry the accumulated weight of a city's history quite like the building at the southern tip of Kowloon Peninsula, where Salisbury Road meets Victoria Harbour. When The Peninsula Hong Kong opened in 1928, designed in a neoclassical style that planted European institutional grandeur firmly on Chinese soil, it was immediately dubbed the finest hotel east of Suez — a designation it has spent nearly a century quietly earning. The 1994 addition of a 30-storey tower by Rocco Design Architects doubled the room count to 300 and gave the property its current silhouette: the original cream-coloured Beaux-Arts wings framing a fountain courtyard, the modern tower rising behind in a composition that, from street level at dusk, achieves an unlikely coherence. The interiors thread a similarly careful line between Eastern and Western registers. Guestrooms finished in ivory and warm taupe carry dark-lacquered furniture with Ming-influenced proportions, ink-wash cherry blossom motifs brushed across the walls in a gesture that avoids pastiche by staying close to abstraction. Floor-to-ceiling harbour-facing windows pull Victoria Harbour directly into the room. Higher in the tower, the rooftop pool sits beneath a retractable glass ceiling, white marble columns carved with classical figures flanking a mosaic-tiled pool that frames the Hong Kong Island skyline with an almost theatrical precision. The dining rooms on the lower floors, dressed in limestone flooring, painted pilasters, and woven rattan seating, maintain the property's characteristic ease — formal enough to command attention, light enough to breathe.

"We've stayed here twice now and it's rapidly become one of our favourites in the world. Wonderful views from the upper rooms and the Felix bar to what is possibly the most impressive skyline anywhere, and fantastic service from hoardes of attentive and friendly staff. Wonderfully located near museums and cultural centres. The rooms are opulent and some might find them glitzy but this is a hustle and bustle grand-tour style hotel. The rooms are however quiet and peaceful. Amazing attention to detail with the flowers and vases on display and overall a wonderful aesthetic. If you want to know you've arrived then this is the hotel for you. The most amazing pool too! Guests generally seem to know this is a good place and and are mostly quieter discreet couple and business types."

"We stayed for four nights with a room overlooking the Courtyard (excellent choice) with breakfast. Arriving at Hong Kong we booked one of the hotel Rolls Royce’s to collect, fabulous experience, and the way to travel, of course! On arrival at the hotel team were there to meet us, and we were shown to our room directly where the check-in process took place, what a great touch! The room was of a classic feel and look, loads of space, and as expected, design and decor from an era, but still timeless. There is consul by the bedside, open and close blinds and curtains, air temp, and much more. Breakfast, very nice, many options, very grand, room and decor to match an event each time, highly recommend. Location, perfect, shops, Star Ferry, trains, tourist locations, just right. The people, the team in the hotel are excellent, from those who meet you at the airport, the driver, the checking in team, the team that makes your room, fabulous. We used the hotel as a base from break, but could have stayed within the four walls just enjoying everything the Peninsula had to offer. And before I forget, the Spa and swimming pool up on the eighth floor, very relaxing, and an area looking out across the harbour, again, fabulous. Absolutely wonderful!"

"On our recent visit to Hong Kong we thought we would treat ourselves to afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. We had not booked but the staff made us very welcome and found us a nice table in the Lobby lounge. The set afternoon tea was excellent in every respect and it was such a nice place to spend some time and relax. Would thoroughly recommend the experience."

"Always worth a return visit to a luxury hotel with history and character. Well situated with great harbour views. You can arrive and depart from the airport by taxi, hotel Rolls Royce (for a price) or take the train to Tsuen Wan. But if you are traveling light take the train to Central and walk to the Star Ferry and take it across the harbour to the terminus which is close by the hotel. The hotel maintains a tradition of giving perfect service. Lovely rooms great restaurants and facilities. The tradition of Afternoon tea is much loved by Hong Kongers and guests alike. I love the swimming pool with its wonderful view. The attendants for changing are unobtrusive but attentive. They checked I had not left anything in my locker. Eating poolside is a great example of the Hotel’s fusion of traditions. I had a Bento Box (Japanese), but it contained Cantonese pork and rice, Dim Sim and vegetables with delicious Thai rolled pickled mango and Italian mango Pana Cota for Pudding. Knife, fork and spoon as cutlery and the tea served in traditional English cup and saucer from English teapot. Faultless room service. Nice touches were the way they rolled up my charging cables and wrapped them in a leather strap. And noticing my glasses case they placed a glasses cleaning wipe to on top of it. And they remembered the room I stayed in several years ago. You will pay accordingly for all this but it is worth it and I will return."
