PB hotel design editorial

Andrée Putman's legacy as the godmother of minimalist hotel design finds an unexpectedly fitting home in Hong Kong's Central district, where The Putman was conceived as a tribute to the French designer nearly a decade after her studio completed the interiors. Set within a slim tower on Wan Chai's boundary with Central, the 27-room property carries the cool, considered atmosphere that made Putman's Morgans Hotel in New York a landmark of late-twentieth-century hospitality design — that particular discipline of restraint that avoids austerity by introducing precisely the right amount of warmth. The interiors work through a palette of bleached ash bed frames, white-upholstered headboards with discreet button detailing, and warm timber floorboards that temper the otherwise chalk-and-linen scheme. Rooms are compact by suite-hotel standards, but the larger configurations open into full kitchen and living arrangements — curved cream sofas, lacquered dark coffee tables, floor-to-ceiling glazing flooding the space with the diffused grey light particular to Hong Kong's elevated mid-levels. Bathrooms are lined in fine white mosaic tile, freestanding soaking tubs positioned against illuminated display niches stocked with botanicals and glassware. The entrance, visible in the images, distills the whole proposition: teal-glazed curtain wall panels sliced by diagonal steel framing, a circular blue-and-white inlaid floor medallion catching the amber glow of a coved ceiling beyond — jewel-box compression before the calm inside opens up.

"One of the best value for money hotels in Hong Kong. Excellent service all around and suites are huge and clean. Location is also very convenient."

A Tripadvisor traveler review

"When checking out, I told the front desk: "Eddie, I'm definitely going online to file a 'complaint' about you! You've completely spoiled me—how am I supposed to stay anywhere else in Hong Kong now?!" Having visited Hong Kong dozens of times, staying at The Putman completely redefined my hotel expectations here. 1. Flawless Front Desk Service (Special Thanks to Eddie) A huge shoutout to Eddie at the front desk—his professionalism and warm hospitality were beyond flawless. What impressed me most was his incredible memory. When I checked in, the moment I spoke, he immediately recognized my voice from a phone query I made the day before! That level of attentiveness made me feel genuinely valued right from the start. 2. An Unexpected Upgrade: The "One-Apartment-Per-Floor" Luxury I originally booked a Standard Room, but thanks to room availability, Eddie kindly upgraded me to a Full-Floor Suite! Can you imagine the feeling of having elevator access directly opening to your own private, single-apartment floor in Hong Kong? For the first time in all my trips here, I stayed in a massive suite complete with a dedicated living room, a convenient kitchenette/pantry, and a stunning freestanding bathtub! Views & Lighting: The suite features both sheer and blackout curtains. Opening them reveals sweeping, 3-sided floor-to-ceiling city views of Central with incredible natural light. Toiletries: The bath products smelled absolutely divine, making every shower a deeply relaxing experience. 3. Two Honest Minor Notes (Didn't Bother Me at All) In the spirit of a balanced review, here are two tiny hiccups to note (though they didn't affect my stay whatsoever): The Wi-Fi password printed on the room card was incorrect (easily resolved by asking the front desk). The JBL Bluetooth speaker automatically turned off periodically and needed to be turned back on. 💡 Bonus Travel Tip for Guests Heading to Shenzhen Bay If you need to travel to Shenzhen Bay after your stay, head straight to the nearby Shun Tak Centre in Central to catch a cross-border bus. Avoid West Kowloon: Do NOT waste effort taking a taxi to West Kowloon to catch the High-Speed Rail. The walking distance inside West Kowloon Station for transfer is extremely long and exhausting. Taking the direct bus from Shun Tak Centre is so much easier! Verdict: Outstanding service, generous layout, unbeatable privacy, and fantastic location. The Putman is now my absolute top choice for any future visit to Hong Kong!"
