PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from the moat walls of the Forbidden City, on a site where every building decision carries the weight of adjacency to one of the world's most scrutinized imperial complexes, the Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing opened in 2018 with a quietly confident brief: to be contemporary Beijing without competing with the thing outside the window. The nine-storey property, designed with interiors conceived to weave Ming and Qing dynasty motifs into a modern luxury register, holds 73 rooms and suites, the majority angled toward the ochre rooflines of the Palace Museum. Four-poster beds in dark-stained timber with slender black-steel canopy frames anchor the rooms, set above hand-tufted carpets whose flowing botanical patterns — teal, blush, and sand — carry the feeling of classical Chinese ink painting translated into wool pile. Teal-lacquered walls in some categories introduce a depth that reads closer to a scholar's study than a standard hotel room. The upper floors give the interiors their strongest argument. The rooftop terrace deploys a long rill of still water as its central axis — a gesture borrowed from classical garden design — flanked by woven rattan seating and large parasols in cream canvas, the entire plateau commanding an unobstructed panorama over the palace precinct to the mountains beyond. The upper restaurant, wrapped in dark herringbone parquet and deep burgundy leather banquettes beneath brass orbital pendants, carries a clubbish mid-century glamour. Downstairs, the bar counter in black-veined marble set against dark timber panelling and a monochrome chequerboard floor establishes a different register entirely — more Shanghai jazz age than imperial capital, and deliberately so.

"Before I start reviewing the property I must start by complementing the great service the concierge gave us before and throughout our stay. They arranged everything like we asked and we did not have a single problem in all our stay. The rest of the staff from their kitchen to room service were also great and went above and beyond to help us with all our needs. The hotel itself is right in the middle of Wangfujing and you can walk right outside to a very lively area full of shops, malls and restaurants. Also their terrace has beautiful views of the city. Their rooms and restaurants were all great. The only thing we missed was a nice outside pool (or inside as their pool is a super small two lane inside pool). Overall it was a great stay."

"A great MO hotel! Perfect central location, lovely rooms and, best of all, great helpful staff. Cool MO bar and Cafe Zi was excellent. My wife and I loved our short day there and wish we could have stayed longer"

"MO hotels are usually very well located and this one is no exception. It is like an oasis in the middle of the hustle bustle of Wangfujing and I looked forward to my return to the quiet and solitude of the hotel after suffering the torture of accompanying my wife to numerous shopping malls nearby. We have travelled extensively all over the world and are familiar with well known hotels. I was expecting top notch service with warm hospitality and the hotel certainly lived up to the expectations. All the staff were warm, polite and helpful. Some are more fluent in English than others, but it was not an issue at all. Check in/check out was smooth. Stena at the front desk was very efficient and courteous. Osgood with his pins was also very friendly and saved me the trouble of finding a post office. The dining room staff spoke excellent English and I felt great when one lady said my pronunciation of 谢谢 was perfect. They really know how to make the guests feel happy ! Breakfast buffet had a good mix. After three weeks of travelling in China eating steamed buns, fried rice and noodles for breakfast I was desperate for some proper continental breakfast and the hotel definitely delivered. One of the best almond croissants that I have ever eaten. The egg benedict was perfect. My small gripe with the Avo toast is that I am used to have the Avo mashed and spread on the bread with a bit of lemon/salt and not served just as slices on bread. No big deal of course. Our room did have a partial view of the forbidden city, you get better view from their terrace. I regret that I did not have time to enjoy the pool. Lovely big bathroom , his and hers basins and a separate WC with one of those Toto modern toilets with many buttons, even separate settings for two users ! Very good sound proofing. One small thing that impressed me was that I had left several cables plugged to the wall socket in the morning. On my return I saw house keeping has neatly tidied up all the cables and even used a cable tie to make them look very organised ! This is not a huge hotel and that makes the experience more personal. It does not have a grand lobby and you may be disappointed that the entrance is common with a shopping mall. But as soon as you step out of the lift it oozes old world charm and sense of peace and solitude. Have a look at the room key card. It is designed by Timmy Yip, who was the art director of one my my most favourite films Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I appreciated the gifts at the time of leaving. My one little comment is that I found the pillows a bit on the sift side. Some hotels have a pillow menu where the guests can choose pillows with different level of firmness. Maybe the management can look into that. Overall a very satisfying stay and I'd certainly consider staying here if I return to Beijing."

"I had such a great stay at Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing. I’ve stayed at quite a few luxury hotels in Beijing, but this one really stands out. The hotel feels elegant without trying too hard — very calm, modern, and comfortable. After spending the whole day out in the city, coming back to the hotel honestly felt like a reset. What made the experience even better was the service. Stena was amazing throughout my stay — always warm, professional, and genuinely thoughtful. She remembered little details and made everything feel very natural instead of overly formal. Allen was also incredibly helpful with restaurant recommendations and arrangements, which made my trip so much easier. You can really tell the team cares about guests instead of just following a standard routine. I also loved the rooftop atmosphere at night and how peaceful the rooms felt. Everything about the stay just felt easy and relaxing. It’s the kind of hotel that makes you want to come back before you’ve even checked out. I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Beijing."
