PB hotel design editorial

Soaring above Beijing's Chaoyang district from within the mixed-use Jing Guang Centre Otto development, a tapered glass tower designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox provides the vertical address for Rosewood Beijing, which opened in 2014 across 372 rooms and suites spread over the lower floors of the complex. The exterior sequence visible from the arrival courtyard sets the hotel's tonal argument immediately: dark textured stone cladding laid in an irregular, almost pixelated pattern gives way to warm timber pergola structures overhead, the two materials establishing a dialogue between Beijing's classical material culture and a contemporary commercial ambition. That same conversation continues inside. The interiors, developed in collaboration with HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates alongside contributions from other design teams across the property's various spaces, move between registers with considerable range. Guest rooms in the standard category deploy dark-stained wood paneling, tufted tan leather day beds, and amber-framed mirror apertures to achieve a compressed but considered residential warmth. The suites, by contrast, open onto planted terraces through floor-to-ceiling glazing, their ceilings finished in patinated bronze geometric panels above pale stone floors — more contemplative, more spare. The restaurant draws its atmosphere from lacquered dark timber screens inset with gold-leaf panels and oversized drum pendants in wrapped rattan, while the indoor pool, sheltered beneath an exposed steel and glass roof structure, centers on a circular stone sculpture rising from green-tiled water, the surrounding planting dense enough to suggest a garden rather than a hotel amenity floor.

"I had a very disappointing experience at the Bistrot Bar in Beijing Rosewood. The level of service I received was unacceptable and clearly influenced by prejudice. I was dressed simply and casually, and it was obvious that the staff judged me based on my appearance rather than treating me as a valued guest. Throughout my time there, the staff—especially a very short female server, around 140 cm tall—completely ignored me while being overly attentive to other guests who appeared more affluent. She was rude, arrogant, and made no effort to provide service or even acknowledge my presence. This kind of behavior is not what you expect from a hotel of this caliber. It reflects extremely poor management and a lack of basic training in hospitality and respect for all guests, regardless of how they look or what they wear. I would not recommend this bar or the Beijing Rosewood to anyone who values genuine service and respect. A truly shameful experience."

"Overall poor experience for the money — there are much better hotels in Beijing - go elsewhere We were traveling with 2 kids Our rate included an upgrade if available. We asked for more space — the hotel “upgraded” us to a smaller room The rooms are showing their age. Cabinets were chipped. Tiles are missing from the pool floor. In room dining food was mediocre and expensive At checkout, the (very rude) assistant front service manager Cloe Yan insisted: - our “hotel credit” did not apply to in-room dining, only to specific restaurants - that we had been told - but could not show anywhere where it had been written - that she owned the hotel, and that the hotel had no complaints line or other person we could ask, which is obviously false — assistant front service managers don’t own hotels. This type of service is offensive, annoying, and wastes my time. I hope someone from the hotel reads this and fixes it. If they’re limiting a “hotel credit credit” to specific outlets - they should write it down or say it somewhere. Otherwise, it’s just lying. I would avoid this hotel. Not worth your time."
