PB hotel design editorial

Straddling the line between imperial Beijing and the commercial energy of Wangfujing, the building that houses The Peninsula Beijing makes its allegiances clear from the street: a traditional pailou gateway in lacquered red and green leads the eye upward to a facade where classical Chinese rooflines — broad, upswept, finished in vermilion and dark timber — crown an otherwise contemporary tower of fourteen floors and 230 rooms. Opened in 1989 and subsequently renovated, the property was designed to negotiate the particular tension of its site, positioned two kilometers east of the Forbidden City in a district where dynastic Beijing and modern commerce have pressed against each other for decades. Inside, that negotiation continues on different terms. Guest rooms carry the Peninsula group's characteristic monochrome precision — dark lacquered furniture, marble headboard panels veined in grey and gold, plaid carpets in charcoal and silver — while the in-room technology tablets and control panels signal the brand's long preoccupation with gadgetry. The Chinese restaurant moves in an entirely different register, its interior furnished with huanghuali-style chairs, carved lattice screens, and hanging palace lanterns that establish an atmosphere closer to a Qing-era scholar's pavilion than a hotel dining room. Above it all, the rooftop bar shelters beneath the building's signature eaves, painted ceiling timbers overhead and hand-painted ceramic tile panels lining the parapet wall, red lanterns glowing against the Beijing dusk.

"We really enjoyed the unique duplex room — it created a cozy, home-like atmosphere that made our stay especially comfortable. The location is excellent, close to many major attractions, and having luxury boutiques such as Hermes and Chanel in the same building is a wonderful bonus for visitors. We also truly appreciated the hotel’s butler service. Special thanks to Jupiter for the exceptional assistance."

"excellent experience from arrival to check-out. Service was consistently attentive but never intrusive. Leo was quick to help with luggage and local information, and small requests were handled efficiently and with a genuine sense of hospitality."

"We booked a Grand Premier Suite on a ‘Peninsula Time’ 3 for 2-night offer which included breakfast, early (after 6 am) and late checkouts. We were given a fabulous suite that was approximately 1100 sq feet. It included a separate cloakroom (toilet), lounge, study, dining and bedroom areas. There was a spacious dressing room with its own dressing table. The bathroom was spacious with a large bath and shower. The décor was high end with a fantastically comfortable bed. The room facilities such as lights and blinds are operated by touch panels which take a bit of time to get used to. The rate included breakfast which was very good although we would have liked some fruit salad as the fruits were mainly provided whole. The options were decent and catered to most international preferences. The service was amongst the best we have come across to kudos to the food and beverage teams. The concierge and door service were also of a very high professional standard as was the reception staff. The hotel is in a good location close to the Wangfujing shopping area. There are three restaurant offerings, the Jing (French) and Huang Ting (Cantonese) and the Lobby Bar/Restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner/snacks. We ended up dining all 3 nights in the Lobby. This was due to the other ‘Fine dining’ restaurants missing the mark for us. They were both located in the basement and appeared empty and uninviting. The French menu was mainly offal based which neither of us eat and both restaurants are extremely expensive. The prices would set you back north of £300 without drinks which is just too high and seemed to be for most people given the only busy restaurant was the Lobby. The service in the Lobby restaurant was excellent and the food, although a limited menu was well executed and tasty. The portions were on the small side but are served with a complimentary bread basket. The cocktail menu was a bit limited but fairly priced. Wine is expensive. We felt the ambiance in the Lobby dining area could have been improved in the evenings with some candles on the table. We really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The service is impeccable and the room was fantastic. For the price we paid it was outstanding. We did feel the dining options need reviewing to be a bit more affordable with cuisine that is a bit more appealing to the average diner. The only other negative was the lack of any seating in the lobby. Waiting in the lobby requires standing which is poor for a 5 star hotel. Sitting in the Lobby restaurant whilst waiting for taxis/transport or tour guides gives staff the impression you are looking to dine."

"We stayed 5 nights in 2 rooms during our family trip to Beijing. The rooms are cosy and well maintained. Great Cantonese cuisine and tea selection at Phoenix Court. Good selection of cuisine at breakfast including fresh dumplings and pancakes. 10-15 mins walk to popular restaurants along Jingyu hutong and the Wangfujing shopping district."
