PB hotel design editorial

Two tectonic languages collide at the entrance to The PuXuan Hotel and Spa: a lower plinth clad in dark diamond-patterned ceramic tile, its surface punctured by circular perforations in a rhythm drawn from traditional Chinese lattice screens, topped by a cantilevered upper volume wrapped in pale rectangular ceramic panels that carry the geometry of hutong courtyard brickwork into an entirely contemporary register. The architecture, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, sits on Wangfujing — Beijing's most historically charged commercial thoroughfare — and manages the considerable feat of feeling rooted without resorting to pastiche. A solitary trained pine at the building's base, visible in the exterior photographs, reinforces the Japanese-influenced sensibility that runs through Kuma's practice, though the material grammar here draws more from northern Chinese craft traditions than from any imported vocabulary. Inside, the interiors — handled by CCD (Cheng Chung Design) — translate that same discipline into warm timber paneling, coffered ceilings, and rooms furnished with dark-framed chairs whose proportions echo mid-century Chinese furniture. Display niches in the guest suites hold celadon-glazed vessels against woven wall panels, while the bar area counterpoints the restraint elsewhere with copper-toned shelving, globe pendant lights in frosted glass, and dark slatted ceilings that compress the atmosphere into something closer to a private library than a hotel lounge. The dining room, with its velvet tub chairs arranged around marble-topped tables and a gallery of Chinese oil paintings anchoring the rear wall, carries the whole property's central argument: that contemporary luxury and deep cultural specificity are not competing propositions.

"Just a 30‑minute walk from the Forbidden City, The PuXuan Hotel & Spa sits gracefully in the heart of Beijing, captivating guests with its striking design by German architect Ole Scheeren and proudly representing Leading Hotels of the World. The property blends clean contemporary lines with subtle nods to Beijing’s cultural heritage, creating an atmosphere of refined, timeless sophistication. With 92 rooms and 24 suites, along with dedicated levels for dining, wellness, and art, the hotel offers an intimate boutique experience enhanced by personalized butler service in every category. During my stay, I resided in a Grand Studio, a beautifully designed space featuring a king‑size bed, a small couch and dining table, a separate room with a chaise lounge, and an open‑plan bathroom that can be discreetly enclosed with sliding doors. Amenities included a flat‑screen TV, a Nespresso machine with tea‑making facilities, complimentary Wi‑Fi, a modest walk‑in wardrobe, and an oversized safe offering ample storage. Upon arrival, I was welcomed with local sweet delicacies, fresh fruit, and a bottle of wine, while my rate also included a minibar replenished daily and fully stocked at no extra charge. The bathroom featured dual washbasins, a freestanding bathtub, a spacious rain shower, a scale, and luxurious Guerlain toiletries, with the Japanese toilet thoughtfully placed in a separate room. Housekeeping was provided twice daily, including an evening turndown service with a weather forecast and a small bedside amenity. Each morning, breakfast was served at Rive Gauche, the hotel’s contemporary French restaurant, offering a generous spread of artisanal baguette, buttery croissants, delicate pastries, charcuterie, cheeses, smoked salmon, fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, juices, yoghurts, local specialties, and warm buffet dishes. Complimentary à la carte options such as Eggs Benedict, waffles, French toast, and traditional Chinese dishes were served directly at the table, with attentive and courteous service throughout. In the evening, Rive Gauche transforms into a modern French dining venue, offering dishes like steak frites, fresh fish, and inventive bistro‑style creations, all delivered with warm, effortless hospitality. Adjacent to the restaurant, the bar serves signature cocktails in a chic Parisian‑inspired setting, while Fu Chun Ju — the hotel’s Michelin‑starred Cantonese restaurant — offers refined seasonal cuisine with equally polished service. The Tea Room invites guests to enjoy elegant tea ceremonies and delicate pastries, and the Lobby Lounge provides a relaxed yet stylish space for light bites, coffee, and conversation. The PuXuan’s Guerlain Spa is a sanctuary of wellbeing, offering luxurious treatments, expert therapies, and timeless French elegance, complemented by a sauna and steam bath. The fitness center features state‑of‑the‑art equipment in a bright, contemporary environment, making it easy to maintain a workout routine. With its boutique design, high‑end amenities, exceptional gastronomy, and serene atmosphere in the heart of Beijing, The PuXuan Hotel & Spa stands out as a true hidden gem for both business travelers and discerning leisure guests."
