PB hotel design editorial

Financial Street in Beijing's Xicheng district is China's answer to Wall Street — a purpose-built corridor of regulatory power and banking headquarters where the Ritz-Carlton Beijing Financial Street has held its position since opening in 2006. The tower's cylindrical glass form, rising roughly twenty storeys above a lower podium clad in warm metallic screening panels, gives the building an unusual profile for this part of the city — curved rather than angular, its curtain wall glowing amber against the Beijing dusk in a way that softens the district's otherwise severe corporate geometry. Inside, the 253 rooms and suites work through a palette of champagne-toned upholstered headboards, dark macassar ebony furniture, and patterned wool carpet that references Chinese calligraphic line-work without resorting to literal ornament. Corner suites turn the cylindrical plan to advantage, their curved window bays flooding the seating areas with daylight at angles impossible in a rectangular room. The bar takes a more emphatic cultural position — lacquered red screens modeled on traditional Chinese lattice fretwork line every wall, framing a live-edge timber bar counter and brass-paneled base beneath a ceiling of pendant Edison bulbs, the effect closer to a contemporary Shanghai drinking den than anything in the international luxury playbook. The indoor pool, lined entirely in deep green Bisazza mosaic tile and anchored at one end by a projection screen playing black-and-white cinema, completes a spa level that is more atmospheric than most hotels at this address would dare attempt.

The Ritz-Carlton Beijing, Financial Street Reviews

"Hotel and staff are wonderful! Spent the day on a tour booked by our concierge to the Great Wall and the Forbidden City curated by David with Peony Tours and the driver Xu. Our guide David was extremely knowledgeable about the city of Beijing and both places we visited. If you’re looking for an excellent tour and a superb guide…look no further, we really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the Ritz for seamlessly handling the entire setup, you came through again!!"

"As other reviewers have written, the Ritz-Carlton Beijing Financial Street is badly in need of some capital spend, particularly to modernise the bedrooms, which are not remotely up to the standard of the top Ritz-Carltons. For those of us who spend quite a few days of the year in the hotel, they are dull and uninspiring. That said, and to give credit to the newish GM, certain things are looking up. With Fann and Itziar on the Front Desk/Guest Relations, the welcome experience is greatly improved. And Candy does a very good job in the Executive Lounge even if there, and all over the hotel, the number of English speaking staff is too low. The food and drink offer in the Executive Lounge has been tweaked for the better (eg with a cocktail on offer each evening). And, contrary to other reviews, I have no particular complaints about the bathrooms. Indeed, there are small things that are excellent - eg the complimentary shaving foam and razor are a lot better than in many hotels. So, there is a long way to go for the hotel to be a top grade Ritz-Carlton but thank you to the team for the improvements in the past nine months. And I hope the owner of the property can finally be persuaded to make the necessary investment."

"We got a chance to visit the same hotel six years after we had our wedding here. The ladies and gentlemen at RC Beijing Financial Street delivered another memorable experience to my family. Itziar and team demonstrated top customer obsession with heartwarming room decorations and a special touch to our new family member (our 3-yr-old daughter’s first visit to this hotel). Although we waited one hour for our room, it was totally worth it when we saw the room preparation. Hotel itself can look dated but the service and top notch hospitality never fades away at RC Beijing Financial Street. We will come back again."

"There were a few hiccups and an uncomfortable employee experience. And, as an American, the thermostat/lack of AC was a real bummer. The entrance + check-in process started off with that top of the top level Ritz service. I stayed in a double room. The interior of the room is dated, but the finishes are done so well that you don't really notice. I also loved the Diptyque toiletries. Uncomfortable employee experience: 15 minutes after I checked in and entered into my room to start getting settled and ready to take a shower, there were knocks on my door. I didn't answer because I was in the middle of doing something and figured they would knock again if it wasn't a mistake. To my surprise, a male Ritz employee used his key to open the door to my room (???). This was a very uncomfortable experience for me as a female traveler alone in my room. If he had done this literally 5 minutes later I would've been in the shower and had my privacy violated. He ended up asking if I needed anything, like laundry. I don't think hotel staff using their keys to open your door 15 minutes after you checked in is acceptable for non-emergencies. He could've left a note or called instead if he didn't hear an answer. Thermostat: it was a hotter couple of days in the Beijing winter during my stay. The hotel accommodated my initial request for a high floor, but it ended up being really, really hot because the room was facing south and getting a lot of sun. The thermostat situation was not good. I turned it down super low and it never really cooled down the room, even in the evening. The hotel nicely switched me to a room facing north, which was much better. It would've not been great if the hotel was fully booked and that wasn't possible. I asked a hotel employee about this after and they said it was because they already turned on the heating system of the hotel and that the hotel uses "natural" heating and cooling. Not sure what that means. Food: I had room service breakfast one day of seafood congee and fruit. The presentation was beautiful. The congee, though, just seemed like a couple pieces of random chopped seafood thrown in. Fruit platter was excellent. I also dined at the restaurant downstairs and had an excellent club sandwich and fantastic service by both the dining host and wait staff. Honestly, the only good parts of my stay were (most of) the incredibly helpful staff that deserve to be acknowledged and the great finishes in the room, but the above experiences soured me on this particular Ritz."
