PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on Wangfujing, Beijing's most storied commercial avenue, within a ten-floor bronze-clad tower whose gridded facade draws on the proportional logic of traditional Chinese lattice screens, the Waldorf Astoria Beijing takes an unlikely approach for a brand built on Gilded Age Manhattan grandeur: it argues that restraint is a form of luxury. The building's exterior, visible at dusk in the images, presents a warm oxidised bronze curtain wall — each bay articulated by deep reveals that catch the light and give the massing a weight and texture unusual for contemporary Beijing hotel architecture. Inside, the interiors work a careful dialogue between Art Deco heritage and Chinese material culture. Guest rooms are dressed in sage-green panelled walls, dark lacquered furniture with brass hardware that echoes the form of traditional apothecary cabinets, and triptych artworks in gold and indigo mounted above upholstered bed benches in cognac velvet — a palette that feels considered rather than assembled. The dining room deploys a coffered ceiling in white geometric relief above walls of warm figured timber and curvaceous banquette seating in caramel leather, with a carved stone scholar's rock anchoring the central axis. Below ground, the pool is lined in deep-veined brown marble with backlit niches and blue glass mosaic, the atmosphere closer to a Roman frigidarium than a hotel amenity floor. The property holds 171 rooms and suites across its ten floors.

"I had emailed the hotel at the time of booking asking for joining rooms and received a reply saying that was based on availability- however when we arrived we were informed there are NO joining rooms at the hotel at all- I would not have booked the hotel if I had known this. We stayed in 2 rooms and one of the rooms unfortunately smelled of cigarette smoke. (There was an air filter in the room which we turned on but it didn’t fully remove the smell.) The rooms are spacious with very nice bathrooms. Aside from that- the location of the hotel is excellent- walking distance to the Forbidden city and excellent Peking duck at Siji Minfu. The hotel recommended 1949 restaurant to us which we went to and it was soooo over priced- the most expensive meal of our trip- I do not recommend it. I think this is a solid hotel but not 5 stars. There is a photo of ‘Hutong courtyard villa’ with the photos of this hotel and that was nowhere to be seen on site- I do not think that is a photo of this hotel unfortunately — that was also part of why I had booked this hotel along with images of super kid friendly decked out rooms- which we also did not receive or witness."

"This was my fifth stay at Waldorf Astoria Beijing. I’ve seen a massive improvement in their service across the board, particularly in the past 12 months. All members of staff are hospitable, and proactive, genuinely looking to make your stay as special as possible. I want to highlight the work of the housekeeping team on Level 10 in particular. Each day, they filled one of our rooms with small gifts like balloons and snacks - this really made our 5 year old daughter feel special. Thank you so much - I hope this message makes it back to that team. Breakfast has always felt a little chaotic here, as the space is relatively small. However, over the past 12 months, they seem to have increased the number of staff on duty, and this has improved quite a lot. The food options at breakfast remain really high quality. Overall, the stand out difference now is that each individual staff member seems much more empowered by management to help improve the guest experience. It really shows. Service levels here are now one of the best I’ve experienced across China. We will be back."

"Our stay at the Waldorf Astoria Beijing was truly exceptional and the perfect way to end our Asia trip. The hotel combines elegance and comfort effortlessly. Our room was spacious, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable — one of those rooms you genuinely look forward to returning to. The bathroom was equally impressive: modern, luxurious, and impeccably maintained. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Beijing, making it easy to explore the city and enjoy nearby shopping and restaurants. What truly made our stay unforgettable was the outstanding service. The staff were consistently warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. Every detail was handled with great professionalism and kindness. A very special highlight was our dinner at the Zijin Mansion, where we celebrated my husband Valdir’s 59th birthday. The experience was simply exceptional. The food was exquisite, beautifully presented, and full of authentic flavors. The atmosphere was elegant yet intimate, and the team made sure the occasion felt truly special. Their attention to detail and thoughtful service turned the evening into a memorable celebration we will cherish. Breakfast was also excellent, with a wide variety of high-quality options, combining both buffet and à la carte dishes. Overall, it was a flawless experience — a perfect blend of luxury, comfort, and heartfelt service. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Beijing."

"Excellent Choice, very well located. Amazing breakfast. Only coffee took always long to be served although restaurant was not full. Beds were very comfortable, housekeeping was great."

"I stayed five nights at the Waldorf in a premier room overlooking the street. The room was beautiful, spacious and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was enormous and very modern. The hotel service was top-notch, especially Caffrey the Concierge. He was incredibly helpful and answered all my questions about Beijing, especially since it was my first time there. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of Beijing, just a 10-minute walk from the Forbidden City. There are also many high-end shops and department stores right outside the hotel. My only suggestion is that the breakfast lobby can get quite busy in the mornings due to the limited space and food choices. Otherwise, there’s nothing negative to say about the hotel."
