Tao Yuanming's fourth-century poem Journey to the Immortal Peach Garden — a tale of a fisherman who stumbles upon a hidden utopia, then loses it forever — is an unlikely source for a 52-storey glass tower in Changsha's rapidly developing Yuelu District. Yet it is precisely this literary concealment that gives the Meixi Lake Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Changsha its organizing intelligence. Callison RTKL's chamfered steel-and-glass form rises from a low podium of angular glazed volumes, the tower's faceted profile catching the evening light in shifting blue planes above Meixi Lake. HBA (Hirsch Bedner Associates) translated the Tao Yuanming source material into interiors that move between the international polish expected of the brand and something more culturally particular: hand-painted cherry blossom panels above upholstered headboards, ikat-patterned bed runners in amber and indigo, ink-wash landscapes framed against floor-to-ceiling city views. Across the hotel's 310 rooms and suites, the palette is warm sand and taupe, grounded by dark-framed millwork and deep-pile carpets with geometric motifs drawn from classical Chinese garden patterns. The pool level, set within the podium, makes the sharpest impression: an indoor lap pool lined in turquoise mosaic sits beneath a soaring white wall finished in pressed three-dimensional ceramic tiles — a surface that reads somewhere between folded paper and carved stone — with travertine columns framing floor-to-ceiling glazing that opens onto open sky. The all-day dining space below brings walnut-clad columns, marble-topped tables, and nailhead banquettes into a room that feels pulled toward the contemporary city just outside its glass walls.
