PB hotel design editorial

Pressed into the forested slopes of Mount Qingcheng, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sichuan's Dujiangyan district, this small lodge achieves something that larger properties on the same circuit rarely manage: it disappears. Relais & Châteaux Qing Cheng Su Shien Valley, inducted into the collection in 2024, is built around a traditional Chinese courtyard philosophy, its low-slung structures with dark clay-tiled roofs and washi-screened windows reading as continuous with the bamboo groves and moss-covered stone paths that surround them. Seen at dusk through the forest, warm lantern light bleeding through shoji panels, the buildings look less like hospitality architecture and more like a mountain scholar's retreat that has simply always been here. Across its approximately twenty rooms, the interiors hold a careful balance between the vernacular structure and contemporary comfort. Original timber framing is left exposed at the ceiling, while walls are finished in warm clay plaster tones that absorb the forest light rather than reflect it. Four-poster beds draped in sheer white linen sit alongside low lacquered tea tables set with cast-iron kettles, and tatami-adjacent seating platforms invite a slower pace. The most quietly spectacular feature is the in-room soaking bath: cut from deep green stone and set flush with the floor, its folding timber-framed windows open directly onto bamboo and rock, erasing the boundary between bathing and forest completely. The restaurant brings the same unhurried mood indoors, a single large ceramic vessel of flowering branches set before an open hearth.
