PB hotel design editorial

That undulating glass tower rising above Tianhe's commercial grid — its facade rippling in a double-curved form that catches Guangzhou's subtropical light differently at every hour — sets the architectural tone for Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich before a guest has crossed the threshold. The building's silhouette, pinched at the waist and flaring toward the upper floors, gives the tower a kinetic quality unusual even by the standards of Pearl River Delta high-rise ambition. The porte-cochère below extends as an elliptical glazed canopy, its radial steel ribs fanning outward like a lens aperture above an illuminated water feature — an entrance sequence pitched firmly at spectacle. Inside, the interiors channel Sofitel's signature French-inflected luxury with a consistency that runs from the guestrooms to the dining spaces. Bedrooms combine tufted leather headboards and deep crimson accent pieces — bolster cushions, armchairs, bed runners — against warm timber veneer wall panels and bespoke carpets scripted with French phrases, a device that signals Parisian lineage without labouring the point. Large-format photographs of French landmarks, including I.M. Pei's Louvre pyramid rendered in vivid red, hang above the beds as art rather than decoration. The steakhouse dining room deploys flat-weave pendant lanterns, dark timber screens, and a floor-level display of lacquered bull sculptures for textural contrast. Most dramatically, the elevated indoor pool sits beneath a faceted dark timber ceiling articulated with hexagonal LED-trimmed coffers, floor-to-ceiling glazing drawing the Tianhe skyline into the water's surface.

"I would like to share my honest experience so that anyone considering this hotel as a 5-star property does not make the same mistake I did. The hotel is poorly maintained. From the moment we entered the room, there was a strong musty smell. There were stains everywhere, and everything felt old and dusty. Our room, in particular, smelled strongly of kitchen odors to the point that my young daughter felt like vomiting during the night because of the smell. We could hardly wait to leave. When I reported the issue at reception, they only brought in an air-conditioning unit instead of offering us a different room. Also, the staff do not speak English at all. When I checked out and gave my feedback, the receptionist simply looked at me, nodded, and said “sorry.” That was the entire response. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone. It was a huge disappointment. There are many, many, many better options available."

"An excellent stay for the price paid. I had a good promo deal through Accor and wanted to experience the CBD, so stayed here two nights solo. The property is ageing a little bit and as is typical for Chinese hotels, sometimes the details get missed. First room I was assigned had some dust and a leaking shower, so I contacted the front desk who arranged for a different room, problem solved quickly. Rooms are very spacious, absolutely gorgeous old-world charm (which I like) with nice décor, and a sitting area (the TV rotates). Bedding was clean, confortable, and the work desk had everything, down to small scissors/stapler/ruler. Fitness centre is top notch, only remark is that the pool is too warm (28-29°) for most tastes. The location is on a main street but still 1,5km from the nearest metro station and the major shopping hub. A bit of a hike on foot in the summer heat and rain. I just did the bike-sharing like the locals, but otherwise you need to take a didi or taxi to get places. So it's imperfect but the comfort, spaciousness, and décor make it up enough for me to still award it 5 stars given the price I paid. Staff are also very helpful in case of assistance needed."

"We stayed there in May 2026, attending a conference which was hosted there. Food was good for breakfast and dinner with plenty of variety. Staff were all attentive and pleasant. The location of the hotel was just ok. We had to get a taxi to most places but they're very cheap so did a bit of sightseeing. Might not rush back but it was pleasant."

"This was the best thing that could have happened to us in Guangzhou. The Sofitel Hotel amazed us from the moment we walked in. A huge chandelier in the lobby, paintings, exhibitions—everything was thought out to the smallest detail. Our room was stunning. French chic was evident in every corner. 😍 Breakfasts were very varied on the second floor, with a wide selection for every taste. We also visited the lounge, enjoying the stunning views of the skyscrapers and the beautifully presented menu. We especially loved the French restaurant. The atmosphere was exquisite, and the food was simply delicious. We'd love to return again and again. A huge thank you to the entire hotel staff for their impeccable service.🔥"

"Checked in to this unexpectedly old Accor Hotel. From the arrival we knew it was going to be less than great, couple of vintage cars displayed at the entrance, dirty, rusting and flat tyres.. check was initially ok, was told we needed to wait a little for our room, a little turned out to be 2 and a half hours.. by which time the front office shift had changed and we had to go through the entire checkin process again. Upon arrival into the room we were greeted by a large cockroach laying on his back, kicking his legs.. called Housekeeping and asked for someone to come and remove it. Duty manager arrived and explained its a “Guangzhou Problem”. We’ve stayed in several Hotels in the city and not had this issue. DM insisted on upgrading us to what he called a suit, although on a higher floor had no views as there was a huge diagonal mullion running through the window and the room was basically the size as the precious room but with more walls so felt extremely cramped. The layout in this “suite” was the oddest I’ve encountered, with the Shower literally inside the toilet cubicle. In the cold light of morning we realised, despite being reassured that the DM had checked the room, that it was dirty, not just a little, thick dust, black mould on ceilings and in the bathroom …. Accor should be absolutely ashamed of the state they e let this property fall into…"
