PB hotel design editorial

Positioned along the Pearl River in Guangzhou's Tianhe district, where the Canton Tower's latticed silhouette dominates the skyline to the south, a dark glass tower rising approximately 40 floors presents an unusual architectural tension: a curtain-wall exterior drawn from the contemporary commercial language of Pearl River New City, wrapped around interiors that speak almost entirely in the vocabulary of European neoclassicism. The Ritz-Carlton Guangzhou, which opened in 2012 with around 350 rooms, leans hard into that contrast, and largely makes it work. Inside, the design registers as a deliberate counterpoint to the tower's corporate exterior — coffered ceilings in warm white plasterwork, mahogany four-poster beds with carved headboards, brass swing-arm sconces, and dhurrie-influenced custom carpets in aqueous blues and creams that give the guest rooms an almost residential composure. The club lounge deploys smoked-glass chandeliers with articulated bronze arms, polished rose-veined marble flooring, and open shelving dressed with bronze animal sculptures, the Pearl River bridges visible through floor-to-ceiling glazing behind. Most arresting is the outdoor pool terrace, where a row of limestone Ionic columns fronts a full-height planted green wall — a small Roman bath transplanted to a mid-rise podium, sun loungers arranged with unhurried confidence on cream travertine paving. It is a gesture that should read as incongruous, yet somehow earns its place.

"After 15 years of staying at The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou, I can confidently say this was my best stay yet. I spent 16 nights at the hotel with multiple rooms, and the level of service was impeccable throughout. What truly sets this property apart is the people. From pre-arrival to departure, everything was handled flawlessly. A special thank you to Dennis Liang and Freya for ensuring all my requests were perfectly arranged in advance. Nora at the Front Desk and Samuel, Night Manager, were consistently professional and attentive. Yanniz and Eirene were always helpful and welcoming. Louis, Manager of Rooms, deserves recognition for always assigning my preferred room and making sure it was set exactly how I like it—including the air conditioning, which makes a big difference during long stays. The Reservations team also did an excellent job managing multiple bookings seamlessly. I would also like to acknowledge General Manager Matthias Vogt for his visible leadership and presence throughout the hotel. The spa team, especially Jodie and Doris, made sure I could relax during a busy trip. With so many new hotels opening in Guangzhou, I’m often asked why I continue to return here—the answer is simple: the service and the people are second to none. Looking forward to coming back soon."

"This is the first time we stayed in this hotel. We were on the 37th floor with a wonderful view of the Pearl River and Tower. Breakfast was great. The swimming pool and spa was nice, but they charge 200 yuan to use the spa. We had dinner at the Michelin star Chinese restaurant, food and service both were very nice, but a bit too pricey, they should give discount for hotel guests. The only complaint was the upkeep of our bathroom was not very bad, the frame was very poorly patched and fixed."

Experiences like this are exactly why I will continue to stay at The Ritz-Carlton Guangzhou on my next trip to the city. Thank you again, Yannis."
