PB hotel design editorial

Against the karst peaks that rise above the Li River at Yangshuo, where Chinese landscape painting has drawn its vocabulary for a thousand years, the Yangshuo Jora Hotel sets a composed argument for contemporary restraint. White rendered volumes, pitched rooflines drawn from vernacular Guilin architecture, and a long reflecting pool that mirrors both the building's circular accent detail and the silhouette of the mountains behind it give the property a calm authority that most resort hotels in this landscape conspicuously lack. The massing separates into low pavilion structures and a taller guest room block, the two scales held in conversation by dark-framed glazing and uninterrupted white planes. Inside, the interiors work through a disciplined palette of bleached ash, dark slate flooring, and warm linen upholstery — materials that carry the feeling of a refined Chinese scholar's retreat translated into contemporary hospitality language. Vaulted ceilings in both the lobby and the dining room give unexpected volume to low-slung structures, their pale timber lining amplifying the diffuse natural light that enters through full-height windows framing karst views on two or three sides simultaneously. Guest rooms continue the vocabulary: vertical timber slat headboard walls backlit by linear strip lighting, platform beds in natural oak, and floor-to-ceiling windows that position the mountain panorama as the primary decorative gesture. The restraint is purposeful — the design understood from the outset that no interior element would compete with what lies immediately beyond the glass.

Yangshuo Jora Hotel Reviews

"I just had to leave a review because of how special this boutique hotel is. From the moment you arrive, you can tell it’s something different. Located just outside the main city of Yangshuo, you drive through a local neighborhood to reach the resort, which makes it peaceful and quiet—perfect if you’re looking to unwind away from the crowds. The design of the resort and rooms leans toward a clean, modern, almost Spartan aesthetic, which I really appreciated. The entire property is beautifully done, with thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces and little pockets to explore and relax in. The view from the room is absolutely stunning—honestly, I could have stared at it for days. I’d highly recommend going for one of the higher floors to fully take advantage of it. What made stay exceptional, was the staff. Every single person we interacted with was top-notch—warm, attentive, and professional. A special mention to Lily, who was so thoughtful and helpful when we arrived and at the restaurant I would definitely come back again, and stay longer just to enjoy the resort more."

"A beautiful hotel along the Li River. The rooms were very large with an outdoor balcony and the bathroom was really nice. The staff were great - thank you to Lily for walking us to the river! So very sweet! There was a nice selection of meals at the restaurant as well and the bar was also very nice."

"After we checked out from the Sheraton Hotel in Guilin, we joined the Li River Cruise en route to Yangshuo. Once we arrived at Yangshuo, we were immediately brought to Jora Hotel where we stayed for 2 nights. Jora Hotel is quite new in the area, having opened shortly after Covid-19. The hotel has breathtaking views of the karst mountains especially in our room. I will never forget this hotel as it has been very generous with their complimentary toiletries, and has a “mini zoo in its premises. I especially liked the 2 black swans frolicking in the manmade pond. Our room and bathroom were very spacious and the hotel staff were very attentive and helpful. The room also has a balcony where guests can relax and enjoy the view. Unlike the hotels in Guilin however, guests will need a car to go out of Jora Hotel’s premises to in order buy snacks, medicines etc. It would thus be a good idea to have everything you need before checking in for the night."
