PB hotel design editorial

Vertical fins of backlit stone and teal-illuminated glass bands articulate the tower facade of The Ritz-Carlton Haikou with a theatricality that makes immediate sense at dusk — this is a hotel designed to be seen from the golf courses and lagoons of the Mission Hills resort complex, one of the largest golf destinations on earth. The building's facade treatment layers textured stone cladding in warm beige and amber tones against a curtain-wall core, the whole composition crowned by an amber-lit penthouse volume that gives the tower a lantern-like presence against the South China Sea sky. Inside, the interiors navigate a familiar Ritz-Carlton tension between the brand's classicist instincts and a desire for local grounding. Guestrooms are furnished in dark-stained walnut millwork with upholstered headboards in steel-blue velvet, leather-topped benches, and framed ink-wash studies that gesture toward Chinese literati painting traditions — floor-to-ceiling glazing pulls golf course and karst landscape views deep into each room. The all-day dining space takes a more atmospheric approach: rough-cut sandstone feature walls, lacquered timber ceiling coffers arranged in offset horizontal bands, steel-framed glass partitions, and deep leather club chairs on herringbone stone floors establish a register closer to a well-appointed members' club than a hotel restaurant. The outdoor pool terrace, framed by palms and a terracotta-toned secondary wing, extends the resort scale convincingly into the Hainan heat.

"After reading the good reviews, we booked a 4 bedroom villa for 4 nights. We chose the villa as we travelled as a family of 6 and the living room comes in handy so that we can easily gather and meet. Compared with being isolated in different hotel rooms. The downside of staying in Villa is the accessibility to the main hall. You will need a buggy to fetch. At times we waited for some time for the buggy to arrive. The rooms are spacious and the beddings are okay, except for the pillow. The housekeeping department are less than satisfactory. We see used cotton buds left on the floor after their cleaning and had also need to remind them to empty dustbin (they missed it out the day before). Table is also not cleaned when the daily tea is delivered. We did not use the private pool and prefer the cleaner looking pool in the main building. The location of the hotel may not be ideal if need to travel to city often. Although taxis are easily available, need to take into account traffic condition. The staff are courteous and helpful. On the whole, for the price paid and the standard the brand name supposedly to deliver, the stay did not meet our expectation."

"This venue is ideal for wedding or corporate event. We held a 3-day event there and I must say that I am extremely delighted for our choice. The service was impeccable with EVERY staff I encountered greeting me with my name, including event attendants, restaurant waitress, club lounge staff, golf cart drivers, and front door bell man. I must first give recognition to Amber of front office team. She was always available any time to respond to our needs, from transportation to laundry, or extension of our stay at midnight due to flight delay. Her service was very impressive. Mr. Terry Lin of F&B was another example of the highest quality of professional service. When he noticed my jacket was stained by red wine at the banquet, he volunteered to take it to dry cleaning and returned to my room the next day. Finally, I was really moved by a wonderful staff Ms. Chen Changfu at the Chinese restaurant. She noticed I had some coughing and provided me a cup of pear sugar soup to soothe my sore throat. I am sure such a wonderful team of staff will make Ritz Carlton Haikou stand out among so many 5-star hotels in Hainan Island."

"My partner and I stayed here for 4 days. We traveled around Hainan Island and used this hotel as a home base. It’s close to the airport and the train station so it was easy to jump over to sanya or wanning for the day and then hop back to Haikou in the evening. At the hotel, we enjoyed many of the amenities. We had a villa and loved swimming in the private pool. We enjoyed the daily fruit and paste ties and the afternoon tea. We also tried several of the restaurants and found them to be excellent. The Flair restaurant on the 20th floor was great and the bar was massive."
