PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the Qiantang River in Hangzhou's rapidly developing Jianggan district, the tower that houses Conrad Hangzhou announces itself at street level through a curved glass porte-cochère draped with a canopy of polished bronze-toned metalwork — an entrance sequence that borrows its visual logic from the river's own famous tidal bore, all surge and reflected light. The hotel's 376 rooms begin high enough in the tower that floor-to-ceiling glazing frames unobstructed views across the water toward the city's newer skyline, a geography that shaped every interior decision. Guest rooms work a restrained palette of dark chocolate leather wall panels, warm timber veneer, and brass-detailed sculptural sconces — abstract forms that gesture toward river reeds without committing to literal ornament. Geometric-patterned carpet in cool grey anchors the furniture groupings, which pair sage-green upholstered lounge chairs with dark pedestal tables in a combination that feels considered rather than merely corporate. The Chinese restaurant several floors up takes a different register entirely: hexagonal display shelving loaded with celadon ceramics and blue-and-white porcelain, a blackwork floral mural panel, patterned stone flooring, and cylinder lanterns suspended from a moulded plaster ceiling form a room that draws on the city's deep ceramic and silk-weaving culture. The indoor pool deck, lined in pale travertine with laminated timber ceiling ribs that curve like the hull of a boat, brings a measure of quieter spatial elegance to a property otherwise more concerned with metropolitan ambition than restraint.

"Travelled to China in December 2025, but have some special requirements as my daughter has allergies to wheat/gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts and sesame. As a result, we have done significant research to find hotels and restaurants which can cater for our special dietary needs. The Langham in Shanghai and In Splendid Clubhouse in Wuzhan were amazing hotels which went out of their way to make sure that we had a fantastic and safe stay. Unfortunately this was not the case with The Conrad by Hilton in Hangzhou. Whilst the hotel rooms are nice, we cannot say anything positive about the restaurants in the hotel. We chose to stay at The Conrad by Hilton as it is supposedly a 5 Star US based hotel chain which states that their restaurants are able to cater for people with special dietary needs. Well this could not be further from the truth. We initially tried to dine at Li’ An a Michelin rated restaurant (located on the 50th floor). After carefully explaining our special dietary needs to the host, they went to speak to the Manger who made a face and waved us away. We were then told that they could not adjust the menu or prepare a dish which would meet our needs (despite us bringing in our own special sauces) We then tried Blue Willow (27 floor), only to be told again that they could not adjust their menu and the chefs were unable to prepare a special meal for us. So basically no Chef or restaurant which we tried at the Conrad Hangzhou was willing to make a special meal for us, despite claiming so proudly that they can cater for special dietary needs. I would advise guests who have special needs to find another suitable hotel and restaurants, a hotel which cares about their guests and actually lives up to the standards that they claim to have."

"Beautiful hotel in the center and most popular areas of the city. The view is magnificent and rooms are spacious and well decorated. The executive lounge offers plenty of delicious food and snacks from morning to evening. The service is especially great, and staff is very attentive. Special shoutout to Ms. Irene Xiang for making our stay memorable and the most pleasant it can be. Thanks again and will come back"

"The Conrad has an excellent location in the heart of Hangzhou’s CBD. It is very close to the Jiangjin Rd Metro. Use exit B, but don’t look for it on Xinye Road, which I did. Turn right into Dangui Street off Fuchun Road and the Conrad is 50 metres down. (See photo) I received a room with a river view. Big room, and excellent facilities. We missed Executive Lounge Happy Hour by two minutes and it was closed. The Li An Chinese Restaurant on Level 50 was open, but they don’t really have a bar up there. A shame because the views are awesome. Breakfast was fine. I went for a walk the next morning in plaza diagonally opposite the Conrad which has the Convention Centre and Grand Theatre in it. Worth doing. 5 star hotel, just lacking a cool bar befitting its location."
