PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the Qiantang River in Hangzhou's rapidly developing Jianggan district, the tower that houses Conrad Hangzhou announces itself at street level through a curved glass porte-cochère draped with a canopy of polished bronze-toned metalwork — an entrance sequence that borrows its visual logic from the river's own famous tidal bore, all surge and reflected light. The hotel's 376 rooms begin high enough in the tower that floor-to-ceiling glazing frames unobstructed views across the water toward the city's newer skyline, a geography that shaped every interior decision. Guest rooms work a restrained palette of dark chocolate leather wall panels, warm timber veneer, and brass-detailed sculptural sconces — abstract forms that gesture toward river reeds without committing to literal ornament. Geometric-patterned carpet in cool grey anchors the furniture groupings, which pair sage-green upholstered lounge chairs with dark pedestal tables in a combination that feels considered rather than merely corporate. The Chinese restaurant several floors up takes a different register entirely: hexagonal display shelving loaded with celadon ceramics and blue-and-white porcelain, a blackwork floral mural panel, patterned stone flooring, and cylinder lanterns suspended from a moulded plaster ceiling form a room that draws on the city's deep ceramic and silk-weaving culture. The indoor pool deck, lined in pale travertine with laminated timber ceiling ribs that curve like the hull of a boat, brings a measure of quieter spatial elegance to a property otherwise more concerned with metropolitan ambition than restraint.

"Almost 5 star but definitely not worth $200-250+ USD/night we paid through Amex FHR. Spend that credit elsewhere…it was just not worth it here. The room was nice, the breakfast was average, and you can only spend the F&B credit in 1 restaurant and though the food was presented nicely, the flavors fell flat and it was 6/10. For the $$ though, I would rate the food 4/10 compared to all the delicious and cheaper foods we have had around China. To elaborate a bit more: -Gym was weak, no staff, bottle waters, there were just a few towels. -Breakfast had variety but was not at the level of a 5 star hotel. Many of the female servers at breakfast were excellent - others including some in suits were not. We had just left the Ritz Nanjing where the staff literally drop what they are doing to greet you and ask if you need anything. Here they are too busy….yet Conrad is supposed to be 5 star? -We were supposed to get a room on a high floor and ended up with a room on the 2nd lowest floor right outside the elevator. Because we were not paying that much $$$ to hear an elevator chime all night, my wife is Chinese and went to the front desk and asked to be moved but was told the hotel was fully booked and we could only move if we paid extra for a suite. Once I heard this I immediately called and asked for the manager in English - to the hotel’s credit the guest relations person called me and was very nice and they did switch our rooms. Wasn’t worth the frustration though when paying this money. The only good thing about this property other than the location (subway is short walk away) was Jared at the front desk - he was very helpful. Jon at the restaurant was great and provided excellent service and remembered us at breakfast the next day. And the uncle who turned down our room at night was also great…we had just checked in and told him we didn’t need turn down but he insisted and left us feeling well taken care of."

"A very nice property, perfect for business purposes. Seemed very well maintained. Staffs were friendly overall. Great and abundant breakfast options. Booked through my credit card travel agency at a premium price for additional benefits but could not enjoy those benefits - chased me to check out and the hotel credits had so many restrictions. Made me wonder why they joined the program in the first place if the benefits cannot cannot be enjoyed. The sink in the bathroom didnt drain properly and was neglected during my entire stay. Still recommended to stay but don't pay a premium since you can't enjoy those benefits."
