Wrapped in mist along the Yulongwan River on the eastern fringe of Kunming, the curved white facade of Lakeview Hotel Yulongwan mirrors the slow movement of water below — a ten-storey arc of glass balconies and continuous horizontal banding that turns the surrounding landscape into the dominant interior feature. The building's gently bent massing, visible in the images dissolving into morning fog, was conceived to track the river's own curvature, each guest room angled toward the water through floor-to-ceiling glazed sliding doors and glass-balustrade terraces. Inside, the interiors navigate a productive tension between contemporary minimalism and Chinese classical reference. The double-height lobby deploys pale oak slatted screens as space dividers — vertical timber fins that filter light and frame views of the forested hillside beyond — while a polished dark stone reception counter anchors the ground plane. Guest rooms carry the same material logic: light ash herringbone parquet flooring, arched timber-slat headboards that curve overhead in concentric ribs, and amber-washed wall panels warmed by low integrated lighting. The more explicitly Chinese register appears in the private dining rooms, where dark walnut lattice screens backlit in brass gold sit above cloud-motif carpets and round banquet tables surrounded by Ming-influenced armchairs upholstered in teal. Throughout, the arc-and-ripple motif echoes from room to room — a quiet formal device that keeps the river, even when out of sight, present as an idea.
