PB hotel design editorial

Twenty-six Republican Era garden villas, built in the 1930s and set within a walled 20,000-square-metre compound in Nanjing's Gulou District, form the fabric of Relais & Châteaux The Yihe Mansions. Beijing practice BDT International Design Agency oversaw their conversion and interior fit-out, completed in 2013, with sufficient care for the original fabric to earn a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award the following year. From the exterior, the compound presents as a quiet neighbourhood unto itself: grey-brick villa facades, hipped tile roofs with dormer windows, mature trees threading up between the buildings, the whole ensemble lit at dusk in warm amber that makes the masonry glow without dramatising it. Inside, the interiors translate the compound's historical mood into something more enveloping. Dark-stained timber panelling lines the guest rooms from floor to coffered ceiling, plantation shutters filtering light across patterned rugs and deep-upholstered seating arranged around marble-topped occasional tables. Freestanding soaking tubs sit open to the bedroom in the larger suites, their chrome floor-mounted fittings in a style consistent with the 1930s period of the buildings. The dining spaces work across two distinct registers of atmosphere: a ground-floor restaurant finished in pale linen upholstery and lacquered ceilings, and an attic-level Chinese dining room where the exposed roof structure has been left white and angled dramatically, furnished with natural oak Ming-influenced chairs around dark lazy-susan tables beneath a branching industrial pendant light.

"I really highly recommend everyone to stay here! It is a whole set of villas, with a total of three rooms, several large living rooms, a chess and card room, etc. The environment here is very good, and the hotel is also very good. The room looks very noble, which is especially suitable for couples and friends to play together."

"I was really happy with stay. Unique architecture style, food was awesome. Yet when I come back to the States I found that mansion double dipped me. Normally I don’t look at my credit card charge until I receive the bill in the mail. I happened to find it coincidentally. Once I found out, I disputed the charge and they admitted they made a mistake. Almost a week later this issue is still not resolved. Buyers aware!"

"This is a charming hotel housed in renovated buildings from early 20th-century China. It won a UNESCO award for architectural preservation in 2014, and the rooms reflect this quality. Despite this "5-star" architecture, the service was unpleasant, confusing, and stressful. We are both foreigners who speak excellent Mandarin and know a lot about this period of Chinese history. We don't think the service was poor due to the staff's lack of English skills, as previous reviews suggested. The hotel staff simply don't understand how to run a hotel or what international hospitality is. Short story: don't stay here, just buy a visitor ticket for CNY50. Long story: The staff seemed deferential, clueless, and controlling all at the same time. As other reviews mentioned, the hotel took photos of our faces (more on this later). Within the first hour of arriving at the hotel, we were treated quite rudely by multiple staff. For example, as hotel guests, we were allowed to visit all the museums in the complex for free by showing our hotel keys. This was the main reason for us staying here. However, at every museum, despite showing our keys, we were yelled at by the staff on duty for not having bought visitor tickets. Once we explained the situation, they were like "why didn't you show me the keys earlier?" Well, I did! Furthermore, there was no map for the hotel complex, and those that were open often had no AC and no lighting in many areas. We had to navigate in the dark to turn on the lights to view the exhibits. At one museum, the staff told us "to hurry up or get out" because she had to give a tour to two people who bought visitor tickets. I thought, is she kicking out guests who paid thousands of CNY to stay at this hotel in order to serve two random people? Yes. Can't she figure this situation out on her own and let us tour in peace? No. She called the front desk and complained about us, and a man came and tried to follow us for the remainder of our walk. We had to walk away until he stopped following us. After that, hotel staff would occasionally come up to us holding up their phones and leave. I gathered that the hotel had a very stupid system of identifying who was or was not a hotel guest. It consisted of: (1) yelling at everyone until they could prove themselves to be hotel guests; (2) restrict the guests' movement so they don't need to staff the spaces they claim are accessible; (3) when not yelling at them, surveil them the whole time with cell phones. All this happened within the first hour! We didn't visit the restaurant, so I have nothing to say about their "Michelin 2-star" quality. The room itself was nice, and that was it. So long story short: stay at a real 5-star hotel and buy a ticket to visit, if you like the architecture and history"

"Yihe Mansions is made up of several buildings on beautiful grounds in a beautiful residential neighborhood, with small, local restaurants around the corner. It is literally a museum, with exhibits in a number of the buildings. Be aware that some of the rooms are on the second floor, with no elevator, or have a few steps up to the door. Also, there are only a couple of employees who speak English, although at least one was always available when I needed help. My room was very nice, with a beautiful bathroom. There are a Chinese restaurant, an Italian restaurant, and a coffee shop on the grounds. Taxi drivers had some difficulty finding the hotel, so it might be a good idea to have the hotel's phone number with you to get help. I can't say enough about the service: I had left my iPad at the hotel in Beijing; Yihe Mansions paid the express fee when the package arrived and I paid when I checked in."

"We booked the Yihe Mansion for a trip with friends to Nanjing. Even though communication was a bit tricky due to our limited level of Mandarin and the limited level of English from the staff, we checked in, got shown to our rooms. The rooms were absolutely great. Spacious, good beds (for Chinese standars luxuriously soft) and the bathroom was fantastic. Some water and fruit in the room was a nice little gesture. We had a good night in the hotel and a good breakfast as well, all though that took a bit long before it got served. The manager smoothed the translation problems we ran into and we can say that we had a great stay at Yihe Mansions"
