PB hotel design editorial

Arranged along the forested western shore of Dongqian Lake — Ningbo's ancient freshwater expanse that has drawn scholars and painters since the Song dynasty — the Park Hyatt Ningbo Resort and Spa deploys the grammar of classical Chinese palace architecture at resort scale: sweeping grey-tiled hip roofs with dramatically upswept eaves, whitewashed rendered walls, and ceremonial approach axes that frame the lake through layers of stone-walled garden terracing. The entrance pavilion, visible at dusk with flame torches flanking a reflective forecourt, carries the symmetry and compressed drama of a Tang-era gate complex, though the construction is entirely contemporary. Inside, the palace silhouette gives way to something more restrained. Guest rooms are fitted with dark slate flooring, exposed rafter ceilings in dark-stained timber with woven panel infill, and wide window bays that dissolve the wall between interior and the surrounding woodland canopy — window seats in stone-coloured linen with burnt-orange cushions placed precisely where the trees press closest to the glass. The all-day dining room makes a more cosmopolitan gesture, Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs gathered around solid-timber tables beneath lotus-form pendant lights, the palette shifting to warm walnut and celadon-glazed wall panels. Terraced gardens step down from the main building to an infinity pool positioned at the lake's edge, the stone planters and specimen trees composing a view that, after dark, places the distant lights of Ningbo's shoreline like a finishing brushstroke.

"Park Hyatt Ningbo has crafted traditional Chinese garden style characteristics, calm, convenient and also modern. But what made our stay a truly unforgettable experience was the team. I'd like to highlight some of the team members: Miss May, the Front Desk Manager contacted us proactively and offered a quite detailed resort guidance. Upon our arrival, she welcomed us and offered a instructive tour at the resort. Thanks to her thoughtful preparations our stay was so nice that we decided to go back again in the near future. Miss Kiki from the Seafood House restaurant was so helpful and patient. Her profissionalism and kindness made our dinner experience outstanded and comfortable! I recommend you try the Seafood House and once you go, make sure to ask Kiki for good suggestions!"

"I travel frequently for work and have stayed in many hotels, including other Hyatt properties. Unfortunately, this was one of my worst experiences to date. The problems started on my first night when I returned to my room after work around 2 AM and discovered I couldn't turn off the lights. I called the front desk, who came to check but couldn't fix it. A technician was brought in, but he couldn't solve it either. Eventually, I was moved to another room – from a king to a twin – which wasn't ideal, but at 3 AM, all I wanted was sleep before my 7 AM wake-up. In the morning, I tried to return to my original room, only to find there was no electricity at all. I had to get ready in the dark using my phone flashlight. The smart toilet didn’t work without power, and I couldn’t take a proper shower because there was no light. I had to go back and forth between the two rooms just to get ready. While I was out for work that day, they arranged a new room for me, supposedly an “upgrade.” However, this room was on the ground floor with no view and a small patch of grass instead of a terrace. The hotel continued to refer to this as an upgrade, which honestly felt more like an excuse than a gesture of goodwill. In terms of compensation, they later claimed I had received complimentary wine – which I did not – and gave me three slices of fruit on the last day. That was it. No offer to refund or discount the first night, which I would consider the bare minimum after such a poor experience. Eventually, I was offered a free taxi worth about €5. Not exactly proportionate to the inconvenience caused. Communication with the Hyatt concierge team afterwards was equally disappointing – generic responses and denials rather than any real accountability. To top it all off, I was charged a €1000 deposit at check-in, and I’m still waiting for it to be refunded more than two weeks later. On a positive note, the breakfast was delicious. However, in a 5-star hotel, I’d expect more staff to speak basic English – even ordering an espresso turned into a challenge. Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel and will continue to stay with other hotel chains where I’ve consistently had better experiences. As a Platinum member at Intercontinental, I’ve never encountered issues like these."

"I went here with my parents for a short family trip. Extremely well views at the resort and around it. We enjoy are the lake view suite, and the balcony was our favorite. The food was also delicious — definitely try out the Seafood House and Tea House. Not every good breakfast experience: too many people, too crowded, and too noisy. Overall, the hotel is good, but some staffs still need to improve their service mindset."
