PB hotel design editorial

Yalong Bay's particular geography — a protected crescent of white sand at the southern tip of Hainan Island, framed by the Nanshan mountains pressing down to the South China Sea — gave the designers of The Ritz-Carlton Sanya a site of rare compositional force to work with. Opened in 2012 across roughly 38 hectares, the resort deploys its main building in a stepped wing formation of warm cream render beneath deep grey clay-tiled roofs, a massing that draws on imperial Chinese architectural tradition without tipping into pastiche. Palm-lined axes and shallow reflecting pools organize the approach from the main block to the beach, the landscaping calibrated to reveal the sea in sequence rather than all at once. Guest rooms pursue a quieter register than the exterior suggests — bleached oak millwork, linen-textured wall panels in warm taupe, and geometric patterned wool rugs anchor the interiors in a palette that shifts between sage green and stone grey depending on orientation. Beds are dressed in the brand's signature triple-sheeting and framed by integrated timber headboard panels with recessed sconce lighting. The mountain-facing rooms frame the Nanshan ridgeline through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass, while sea-view categories open onto balustraded terraces directly above the gardens. At pool level, a broad infinity edge dissolves toward the beach, teak sun decks flanking the water in the manner that has become standard across the region — though here the backdrop of undeveloped headland gives the composition an uncommon sense of natural enclosure.

The Ritz-Carlton, Sanya Reviews

"In May 2026 my wife and I spent 30 days in China, visiting 10 different cities. In every city we stayed in 5-star hotels, all of which had very friendly staff that provided excellent service. Our stay at the Ritz-Carlton Sanya, at Yalong Bay, was different from the others in two ways. Shortly after we checked into the hotel, Tatyana (resort Loyalty Team) proactively reached out to us via WhatsApp to introduce herself and provided a summary of amenities, the several restaurants available at the hotel and hours of operation. During our stay I had a few questions, which Tatyana very promptly provided answers to. While the option of calling the front desk is available at all hotels, being able to communicate on a more personal level is much easier. The evening prior to our departure, she reached out again to confirm checkout time and see if we required any assistance. While checking out, Tatyana was at the front desk to assist. A few days after we left, she reached out again to thank us for choosing their hotel and asked if we had any suggestions for potential improvements. While the food we encountered at every hotel was very good, the Ritz-Carlton Sanya restaurant staff were more engaged with the guests and very attentive to needs at the tables throughout the meal. The different restaurants offered an excellent mix of Chinese and Western dishes, all prepared and presented with quality and attention to detail. Fellow Canadian, Executive Chef Stuart was very visible and available to interact with the guests which provided a very friendly touch to the experience. During one dinner at The Sand restaurant, the Chef came to our table to ensure we were pleased with the meal – again a very personal hands-on touch. Overall, we were very impressed with how friendly the Chinese people were in general, and the superb service we received while touring the country. English was a challenge at times, but everyone we encountered were very familiar with and willing to use translator apps. Our experience at the Sanya Ritz-Carlton was a highlight of our trip not only because of the beautiful grounds and surrounding scenery, but also because of how everyone we encountered at the resort went over and above to ensure our stay was memorable. Competing in a sector of the tourism industry that thrives on excellence, the seemingly small “personal touches” go a long way. My only recommendation to the Ritz-Carlton Sanya is to keep doing what you are doing, because it is recognized and appreciated."

"In Ritz-Carlton, Sanya, my family and I spent a wonderful four-day to celebrate my birthday. I truly felt the staff’s warmth and genuine hospitality throughout my stay. Our room offered a beautiful ocean view, and the hotel provides a great selection of Chinese and Western dining. I highly recommend trying the Pearl and The Sand. There were also live band performances, adding to the lively atmosphere. If you stay at the Executive Floor, the lounge offers five meals a day, taking care of your needs in a very thoughtful way. For those who like outdoor activities, don’t miss the paddleboarding, deep-sea fishing, and pickleball."

"My husband and I had a couple of wonderful evenings at the Saturday BBQ at the Ritz Carlton. We indulged in an incredible variety of food, including sushi, BBQ seafood, BBQ lamb chops, sausages, an excellent cheese board, and delicious ice cream. Everything was beautifully prepared, and honestly, we didn’t want to leave. We were seated outside with a stunning view of the beach and pool, which made the evening even more special. The service was excellent — the staff were very attentive, welcoming, and able to speak English, which we really appreciated. One of the highlights of the night was meeting Executive Chef Stu, who generously took the time to chat with us about the hotel and recommend things to do in Sanya. His passion and hospitality truly stood out. It was a memorable experience from start to finish, and we will definitely be coming back."

"Been to this hotel a few times now never disappointed. We attended the ‘Nothing Ordinary’ culinary event, the title says it all, many guest chefs from around the ritzs 5 star hotels, literally everything you could hope for, particularly enjoyed the pineapple crusted salmon, my wife is a pescatarian and absolutely loved the food, not to mention lots of wine available, gotta admit we were a little tipsy but the entertainment was traditional Chinese fireworks a huge display of iron filing fireworks, a real treat if you have never seen it. Lots of attention to detail and hats off to head chef Stuart ‘the man from Toronto’ and the GM Sherona, we regularly attend the Saturday night bbq now"
