Restrained-moderntropical

PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a man-made peninsula curving into Haitang Bay on China's southernmost island, a low-rise constellation of white cubic villas and pavilions announces The Sanya EDITION's central ambition: to bring Ian Schrager's urban design intelligence to a tropical resort context without losing either quality in translation. Opened in 2015, the property was developed with Marriott International and sits within the vast Haitang Bay resort corridor, its architecture — clean orthogonal volumes pushing through tropical planting, glass walls dissolving the boundary between villa interiors and private pool terraces — carrying the restrained modernism that defines the EDITION brand across its global portfolio. The interiors sustain that discipline with real conviction. Guest rooms layer bleached oak millwork against large-format stone tiles in warm greige tones, the furniture — leather-woven desk chairs, linen upholstered sofas, slim blackened-steel floor lamps — maintaining a consistent material temperature throughout. Villa categories open directly onto planted courtyards with private plunge pools, the floor-to-ceiling glazing pulling the garden in so completely that the distinction between inside and outside becomes largely conceptual. After dark, the property shifts register: the bar deploys a dense constellation installation overhead — hundreds of suspended glass orbs lit from within — against walls of dark-stained timber, while the poolside restaurant keeps two mature trees growing through its teak deck, festival lighting strung between the canopies above rattan dining chairs and candlelit tables.

"Me and my wife went here for part of our honeymoon and it was even better than expected. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. We have a wonderful host called Julie who made us feel even more welcome and she spoke perfect English so this was super helpful. She even prepared us special surprises because it was our honeymoon which was very sweet! Highly recommend!"

"We had an absolutely unforgettable stay at this beautiful resort in Sanya, Hainan – truly the “Hawaii of China.” Before arriving here, we spent time at the Rosewood, which was already an excellent experience. However, what made this stay even more special was the outstanding, truly personalized service we received from our butler, Julie. A very special thank you to our wonderful French butler, Julie. She took care of every single detail with incredible professionalism, warmth, and genuine kindness. Nothing was ever too much to ask, and she always anticipated our needs before we even had to mention them. Her dedication made us feel incredibly welcome and transformed a great vacation into an unforgettable one. Julie, thank you from the bottom of our hearts—you are a true asset to this resort. We also had the pleasure of playing a fun game of padel with the Manager, Jordi Villegas, his son, and my own son. It was such a relaxed and enjoyable experience that perfectly reflected the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the resort. Although the resort is large, it never feels overwhelming. Everything is beautifully designed and has a cozy, intimate feeling. The facilities, the service, and the overall atmosphere are simply outstanding. The location is fantastic as well. Sanya, on Hainan Island, really deserves its nickname as the “Hawaii of China.” It’s only about a one-hour flight from Hong Kong or Shenzhen, making it a perfect tropical getaway. We highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for luxury combined with genuine hospitality. We will definitely be back. Thank you to the entire team, and especially to Julie, for making our stay so memorable!"

"Julie is an incredible concierge. She worked all hours of the day and made everything happen for us, quickly. So friendly. Great work. We need for Julie’s. Markus runs one of the best fine dining food programs I’ve ever seen. I love food and being able to enjoy every single offering at a hotel is an incredible feat. He always made a point of coming to say hi and checking in on our experience. Hats off to this man and then some. Some other notable people that made an impact on our stay. Jorge, Chef Boga, Mereen, and Sarah. Honestly we were treated so well at this hotel. It raised my expectations for any five star hotelier and I’ve been to some incredible places. 15/10. Thank you team and wishing them all much success in Marriott."

"Great location, super convenient to go everywhere. The atmosphere is super nice, such a great KOL hotel 😝 stylish and modern Our room is very spacious that has a jacuzzi at the balcony and not that much noise which made me easily fall asleep Very clean every where, and the scent is very nice. I really like the smell. I have to say a huge thanks to our butler Julie who has been taking very well care for us. Always ask what we need and tried to satisfy our request. And their stuff is very thoughtful too, like they know I like coffee and dropped me more capsules and wrote me a note!"
