PB hotel design editorial

Rising above Jing An's low-rise shikumen lanes and colonial-era villas, a slender tower clad in pale stone and dark-framed glazing sets Alila Shanghai at an interesting altitude — literally and conceptually. The hotel sits within a high-rise that places it in direct conversation with the district's layered urban history: from its upper floors, the preserved French Concession rooflines spread out below while Pudong's financial towers loom on the horizon, a compression of Shanghai's two dominant architectural eras visible from a single window. The interiors, dressed in warm oatmeal linens, bleached oak bed frames, and leather sling chairs, carry an unhurried residential quality — rooms furnished with carefully chosen contemporary artworks, custom textured rugs, and dark-stained timber ceiling fins that organize the light without imposing on it. The rooftop bar is the property's most architecturally committed space: a barrel-vaulted ceiling sheathed in warm bronze mesh curves over a long counter of rich dark timber, the room's amber glow intensifying against floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Jing An skyline at dusk. Below, the indoor pool is lined in grey-green stone with coffered skylights punched into a low ceiling, the atmosphere closer to a private Roman bath than a hotel wellness floor. Across the property, the palette stays disciplined — stone, leather, aged wood, and sage velvet — letting the city itself provide the visual drama.

"The location of the Alila Shanghai is perfect for exploring Shanghai (we live here but love that area). The hotel entrance is almost mysteriously hidden which makes it feel secluded and special in spite of being in the middle of the city. The design is beautiful and the use of interior and exterior lighting executed brilliantly. The staff were friendly, helpful and readily available to assist and guide. The breakfast was delicious and only partly a buffet which, I greatly appreciated. The room was very comfortable and well appointed with the mini-bar a high point. The evening and morning gong ritual was lovely and the gym comfortable and well equipped. The massage we had in the spa, while expensive by local standards, was absolutely wonderful and worth every penny. The only unfortunate thing was that the mysterious rooftop bar had to overlook a construction area. Once completed, it will be a great view over a revamped shikumen but if I were the hotel, I’d find a way to block that view for now with something interesting (old movies playing on a kind of fence-screen???)."

"Absolutely loved our stay at Alila Shanghai. From the moment we arrived, the hotel made a beautiful first impression: stylish, calm, elegant, and full of thoughtful details. The atmosphere is incredibly beautiful, with a sense of modern luxury but still very warm and welcoming. Our room was one of the highlights of the stay. It was large, spacious, cozy, and very comfortable, with a stunning view over the city. Waking up and seeing Shanghai from the room was truly special. Everything in the room felt well designed, peaceful, and made for relaxing after a busy day in the city. When we checked in, we were welcomed with delicious local fruits and desserts, which was such a lovely touch. It immediately made the stay feel personal and memorable. I also really loved the hotel’s garden area, especially the beautiful tree sculpture. Another detail that impressed me was that they grow fruits and vegetables on the hotel rooftop — such a unique and thoughtful idea, and it gives the hotel even more character. The evening restaurant was absolutely amazing. We enjoyed it so much. The menu was very impressive, especially the lobster and black caviar dishes. Everything felt refined, creative, and beautifully presented. It was definitely one of the best dining experiences of our trip. The staff were attentive, kind, and professional throughout our stay. The whole hotel has a calm, sophisticated energy, and it feels like a true escape in the middle of Shanghai. We left with very warm memories and would happily come back again. Highly recommend Alila Shanghai for anyone looking for a beautiful, stylish, and memorable stay in the city."

"This hotel is stunning and a total oasis in the heart of Shanghai. The staff were beyond exceptional and super helpful with advice and recommendations (they even helped me sort out a TaoBao order!). Our bedroom was massive and well laid out, with a separate shower room, sinks and a decent bit of space to unpack. From the sitting rooms and dining area to the pool secret garden, each space feels super curated and the art totally tops it off. Also loved the various breakfast set menus (and our dinner at 500 Weihai restaurant). Whether you're in Shanghai for business or pleasure I'd 1000% recommend."
