PB hotel design editorial

Rising above Jing An's low-rise shikumen lanes and colonial-era villas, a slender tower clad in pale stone and dark-framed glazing sets Alila Shanghai at an interesting altitude — literally and conceptually. The hotel sits within a high-rise that places it in direct conversation with the district's layered urban history: from its upper floors, the preserved French Concession rooflines spread out below while Pudong's financial towers loom on the horizon, a compression of Shanghai's two dominant architectural eras visible from a single window. The interiors, dressed in warm oatmeal linens, bleached oak bed frames, and leather sling chairs, carry an unhurried residential quality — rooms furnished with carefully chosen contemporary artworks, custom textured rugs, and dark-stained timber ceiling fins that organize the light without imposing on it. The rooftop bar is the property's most architecturally committed space: a barrel-vaulted ceiling sheathed in warm bronze mesh curves over a long counter of rich dark timber, the room's amber glow intensifying against floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the Jing An skyline at dusk. Below, the indoor pool is lined in grey-green stone with coffered skylights punched into a low ceiling, the atmosphere closer to a private Roman bath than a hotel wellness floor. Across the property, the palette stays disciplined — stone, leather, aged wood, and sage velvet — letting the city itself provide the visual drama.

"Today marks my fourth stay, and once again, Joy, Monica and the entire team have reminded me why I keep coming back. I arrived today after an incredibly long and exhausting journey. The flight was already challenging because of the typhoon and severe weather, and after landing, there was an extremely long wait at immigration. By the time I finally reached the hotel, I was completely exhausted — and, honestly, the journey had been quite terrifying at times. The moment I arrived, Monica and the team immediately took care of my luggage and made the check-in process effortless. What stood out to me most was not simply the efficiency, but the genuine understanding and empathy they showed. Monica could immediately tell how exhausted I was and treated me with such warmth and consideration. It is these little things that make a hotel exceptional. Luxury is not always about how grand the lobby is or how expensive the room looks. True luxury is when people remember you, understand how you feel, and genuinely want to make your stay better. That is exactly what I experience every time I return here. The hotel is also beautifully maintained, with a level of care and attention that is evident throughout the property. And I have to mention the bed — without a doubt, one of the best beds I have slept in in Shanghai. After a long-haul flight, there is nothing better than coming back to a room where you can completely switch off and sleep comfortably. But ultimately, it is the people who make this place special. Joy, Monica and the entire team have created something that is much more difficult to achieve than luxury — they have created a feeling of belonging. Four stays now, and I already know this won’t be my last. For me, this isn’t simply another hotel in Shanghai. It is home."

"I just left my brief stay at the Alila Shanghai. Everything was perfect in every way. Spectacular renovation of the former Four Seasons. The interior public spaces are stunning!! The room was spotless, beautifully designed and comfortable. I didn’t want to get out of bed… let alone leave the hotel. Such a quiet, peaceful respite in the middle of Shanghai!! My breakfast was spectacular. Again, a beautiful dining room, scrumptious and plentiful options abound. Perfect service. PERFECT Actually, that’s the best word for this hotel and the service experience. PERFECT. I’m honoured to have been your guest, and hope to return soon! J PS. You outdid the former occupant of this property, and created something far better. Not an easy task!!"
