PB hotel design editorial

Gensler's twisting glass spire at 632 metres made the Shanghai Tower the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world when it completed in 2015 — a structure whose spiralling double-skin curtain wall was engineered to reduce wind loads by 24 percent while giving each floor a slightly different orientation to the sky. J Hotel Shanghai Tower fills the uppermost reaches of that tower, from the 84th floor to the 110th, making it one of the highest hotels on earth and giving its 165 rooms and suites an address that is, quite literally, above the clouds. The aerial images confirm what guests quickly discover: at this altitude, the Shanghai World Financial Center and Jin Mao Tower — giants at ground level — appear as neighbours rather than landmarks. The interiors, led by the Hong Kong studio CCD (Cheng Chung Design), work a restrained palette of warm champagne tones, dark polished stone floors, and backlit textile headboards that allow the floor-to-ceiling glazing to dominate without competition. Guest rooms carry tan leather armchairs and dark-walnut credenzas with circular brass hardware, details that nod toward Art Deco Shanghai without recreating it literally. The swimming pool is the property's most singular space — its walls and ceiling clad in hammered metallic tile that ripples with refracted light, creating the sensation of swimming inside a wave. In the uppermost restaurant, a large polished-steel shark sculpture suspended above marble-floored dining tables gives the room an edge that the views alone, extraordinary as they are, would not.

"Awesome experience, jojo and Lucy were fantastic"

"Even when paying £450/night per room (we have 2) you are NOT allowed to use their swimming pool (which has no sauna/steam room facilities) unless you purchase swimming caps for all the family at a further £10/cap. The WiFi has failed to work on all 4 devices (1 android phone, 2 iPhone and an iPad). Not what you would expect from a 'luxury' hotel. Whilst it does have excellent views at a distance (although there is a large gap between the room and the exterior windows), with a high quality breakfast the hotel lacks in some very important areas and would probably be a 4* hotel if it was lower down. We left the Pudong Mandarin Oriental hotel to stay here for 2 nights and I cannot express my regret strongly enough. That was a luxury hotel in every respect."

"A very luxurious and modern hotel overall, and definitely recommended. We stayed in a Grand Suite, which was huge, quiet, and very comfortable, with a great bed, excellent views, and a very useful dressing and luggage area. The room felt new and well designed throughout. Nice Acqua di Parma amenities in the bathroom, and also a real plus: a proper desk with both power and Ethernet. Check-in and check-out were easy, and the welcome was very friendly. Breakfast at Centouno was good. The buffet is not huge, but still nicely done, with a fairly broad selection and a clear focus on Asian and Chinese dishes. The main area with room for improvement is staff English. In the bar, we had to explain our included cocktails again every evening, and the first response was initially “no” until a manager intervened. Still, overall a very good and very comfortable stay."
