PB hotel design editorial

Rising thirty-three floors above the Bund's northern fringe, where Nanjing Road East meets the Huangpu River, the tower that houses the Shanghai EDITION presents a sharply contemporary counterpoint to the colonnaded neoclassical banking facades a short walk south. Opened in 2018 and designed with interiors by Ian Schrager's team in collaboration with Yabu Pushelberg, the hotel carries 145 rooms across a slender glass shaft whose faceted crown, visible in the exterior images at dusk, gives the building an angular silhouette distinct from the broader curtain-wall towers dominating Pudong across the water. Inside, the design deploys a vocabulary of pale oak wall panelling, low platform beds with floating timber bases, and fur throws laid over white linen — a warmth that sits in deliberate contrast to the spectacle framed beyond each window. The rooftop bar, furnished in teak and wrapped banquette seating, delivers what is arguably the most cinematically composed view of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Pudong skyline available from the Puxi side of the river. Below, the spa pool is lined between tall bronze-toned timber fins set against raw concrete, candlelit in a register closer to a contemplative bath house than a hotel amenity. The tension the property navigates — between Schrager's instinct for urban drama and the Bund's weight of history just metres away — is precisely what makes it compelling.

"Having come from the well lit, well serviced, friendly and welcoming Peninsula Beijing, the Edition is quite the contrast. Dark lobby, very dark elevators, a staff that at most is appropiate but never welcoming. House keeping is a disaster. Once a day they execute the bare minimum. We are on our third night here and despite requesting the we have not once had turn down service. Shanghai and China have a lot to offer, lovely people, great service. The Edition reflects neither."

"My friend and I had an amazing time at the Edition Hotel Shanghai. We got a room with a stunning view of the Pearl Tower. Special thanks to Mia and Colin — without their arrangements, we wouldn’t have had such a wonderful experience. We look forward to our next trip to Shanghai and staying at the Edition again."

"The hotel room we stayed at was modern without signs of wear. Our room provided everything for us on check in. But more so than the view and quality of our room, our highlights were the staff and how they made our stay personable. Our housekeeper was very attentive and noticed we drank lots of water our first couple days and provided us with six cans. They also refilled our toiletries and even provided me with an Invisalign cleaner! I always found cleaning my Invisalign during travel a little gross and annoying so that felt special. The fruit they provided at the beginning and end of our stay were also top tier a nice touch. We had Shanghai Tavern for breakfast each morning which was great and Lori the supervisor was so nice! She gave us great recommendations for our day trip to Suzhou. Staff like her take our experience from a standard five star hotel to a memorable one My sister recommended this hotel to us when she visited and now we booked this room for my parents!"

"I stayed one night at the Shanghai EDITION during a business trip. If you are looking for a stylish design hotel in central Shanghai close to the Bund and Nanjing Road, this is a very convenient option. The location is excellent—right next to a metro station, two blocks from the Bund, and directly connected to Nanjing Road pedestrian street. The area is very lively and busy, but once inside the hotel it feels surprisingly calm and peaceful. The hotel has a very distinctive design — modern, stylish and quite trendy, with a strong focus on interior design throughout the property. My room was spacious with a large bathroom, and the amenities were from Le Labo. Everything felt comfortable and well maintained. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and professional. Breakfast was very good. The buffet itself is relatively small, but there is a large à la carte menu, which offers plenty of additional options and works very well. The gym is not very large, but the equipment is modern and when I visited it was mostly empty. There is also a small indoor pool which is nicely designed, although it would probably feel quite crowded if several guests wanted to use it at the same time. One small downside is that the waiting area for the lifts and the elevators themselves are very dark due to the design concept, which sometimes makes it surprisingly difficult to see the floor numbers on the buttons. The hotel also has several restaurants and bars. The Japanese restaurant on the top floor is particularly good and worth visiting. Overall a very enjoyable stay and a great option if you want a modern hotel in a very central Shanghai location. I would definitely consider returning."
