PB hotel design editorial

Bringing a Bangkok institution into dialogue with one of Shanghai's most quietly ambitious commercial districts was the design challenge at the heart of The Sukhothai Shanghai, which opened in 2019 within the Jing An district's mixed-use Wheelock Square development. The hotel's public spaces were conceived by the acclaimed Thai designer Lek Bunnag, whose work on the original Bangkok property established the brand's signature language of restrained classicism drawn from Sukhothai-era temple forms — here reinterpreted for a northern Chinese urban context through warm-toned timber screens, dark stone cladding, and a cobblestone motor court visible from the arrival sequence, where a resident tuk-tuk adds an unexpected Bangkok note to the Shanghai streetscape. The 116 guestrooms carry Bunnag's calibrated palette of sage green, warm walnut joinery, and dark granite — the bathrooms sheathed in the same charcoal stone that lines the indoor pool hall, a subterranean chamber of considerable architectural gravity where grey limestone walls rise in stepped volumes around the water. The restaurant dining room works a different register entirely: walnut-panelled columns, forest-green subway tile behind the open kitchen, globe pendants suspended on fine cables above black banquette seating and solid oak tables. It is a room closer in sensibility to a confident European brasserie than to the soft luxury typical of its regional competitors — which is precisely the point. The Sukhothai Shanghai trades in disciplined understatement, letting material quality carry the argument.

"Great location, great food, and room was awesome! Huge shower was great after a swim. Perfect place for a Shanghai staycation. My son's favorite restaurant is close by and we really enjoyed the holiday downtown."

"Not small rooms, Great greeting at the front. Great location. (It is not exactly in the center of famous tourist attractions, but it was charming for me. less crowded). On the other hand, lack of variety of food at breakfast."

"Overall, the hotel offers strong customer service, an excellent location, and impressive wellness facilities such as a pool, sauna, and steam room. Staff were particularly helpful with arrangements like restaurant bookings and bike hire, which enhanced the stay. However, there were several operational issues that affected the experience, including the steam room being out of order, lack of staff presence in the changing rooms, and poorly located amenities. In addition, the coffee and tea machine was consistently unavailable during breakfast, beverage options after dinner were limited, and some basic drink preparation services were not met to a 5-star standard. While the hotel promotes certain facilities such as a running track, the lack of accessible information from reception made this difficult to use in practice."

"room was fantastic and clean and well maintained. however the service team were not very helpful when in need of assistance and not flexible. for the price we paid, and under the GHA group, i was expecting a better experience after much more positive experiences in other GHA group properties like Capella."

"Pro: - Big room; excellent location, plenty of eating options around and you can easily get to the shopping areas. - the hotel is next to a big mall. The mall also has a supermarket; - breakfast is not bad. Adequate. - Service is attentive. - sleep quality is very good. Bed is comfortable. - the curtain is electronic; - the table in the room is big enough so you can do work on it (for business travelers). Con: - WIFI is slow. Although we found that in a lot of places in China, the wifi is slow. - the lift can be a bit slow sometimes. - when comparing to the bangkok sister property, we find that the bkk sukhothai is slightly higher standards in terms of food and facility (but we prefer the the room in Shanghai). Neutral: - the hotel has like a minimalist vibe and was quite dark in the lobby and restaurant. The vibe feels like a design Hotel."
