PB hotel design editorial

Planted on the North Bund where the Huangpu River curves toward Pudong, the sinuous curtain-walled tower housing W Shanghai The Bund makes its position in the Shanghai skyline a deliberate argument — close enough to the Oriental Pearl Tower that the landmark fills every upper-floor window, yet firmly planted on the historic western bank rather than the glittering new one. The building's fluid, horizontally banded facade, visible in the exterior image with its sweeping canopy and illuminated entry, carries the feeling of motion frozen in glass and metal, a gesture toward the dynamism of the city rather than its heritage. Inside, Rockwell Group handled the interiors across the hotel's 374 rooms, threading a saturated red-and-black palette through guest rooms where lacquered benches, oval-patterned carpets, and bulbous lounge chairs in crimson upholstery reference Chinese decorative tradition without resorting to pastiche. Floor-to-ceiling glazing turns the Pudong skyline into a permanent installation — the suite image with its circular fuchsia rug and herringbone timber flooring frames the Oriental Pearl Tower like a painting. The rooftop pool, mosaic-tiled with a bold graphic motif beneath the waterline, delivers the same panorama horizontally, Lujiazui's towers reflected in still blue water. The bar, clad in dark veined marble underfoot and finished with a burnished bronze ceiling, shifts the register entirely toward nightclub cool, gold-rimmed stools and emerald banquettes turning Pudong's neon into a backdrop rather than a view.

"The hotel is located in the White Magnolia Plaza area of Shanghai. From the balcony of the restaurant, guests can enjoy a view across the Huangpu River toward the high-rise skyline of Lujiazui Financial Center. This view is clearly a major selling point, and many guests—including our group of five—came specifically for this experience. However, the service was disappointing from the start. While we were seated in the waiting area before dining—without disturbing others and behaving appropriately, though dressed casually during the holiday—a supervisor with a rather judgmental attitude approached us and asked whether we were “just sitting and resting.” The implication was that this was not a place for non-spending guests, which felt inappropriate and unwelcoming. When we asked whether Marriott Bonvoy elite members receive dining discounts, we were told that “à la carte items are eligible, but set menus are not.” This kind of so-called “discount” feels misleading, and is not something commonly encountered at other high-end Marriott properties in Shanghai. We ordered the set menu priced at RMB 328, which included one appetizer, one main course, and a dessert buffet. The appetizer was mushroom soup, and the main courses were fried prawns and fish—essentially a basic fish and chips style dish with two small pieces of fish, two small prawns, and a large portion of fries. The “dessert buffet” was quite limited, consisting of only about five simple cakes and one ice cream option with four flavors, without any beverages such as coffee or tea included. Overall, both the taste and value for money fall far short of what one would expect from a W Hotel dining experience. Objectively speaking, there are many high-end restaurants and hotels in Shanghai offering similar Bund views. Compared to those, both the accommodation and dining at this hotel offer poor value, and the service mindset is lacking. I would not recommend this hotel."

"Our stay at the W Shanghai – The Bund was nothing short of exceptional—an experience that redefines what true luxury hospitality should feel like. From the moment we arrived, the level of service was simply impeccable. Every detail was anticipated before we even had to ask. Doors were opened, elevators were called, and every movement through the hotel felt seamlessly supported by a team that operates with precision, warmth, and genuine care. The staff consistently greeted us with elegance and professionalism, creating an atmosphere that felt both elevated and personal. The property itself is a masterpiece of modern luxury—immaculately maintained, visually striking, and effortlessly clean. Even the presence of an autonomous cleaning robot quietly maintaining the floors around the clock added to the hotel’s forward-thinking sophistication. Dining at the hotel was a highlight in itself. From the restaurants to the bar, every culinary experience was refined and memorable. The 24-hour in-room dining exceeded expectations at every turn—an essential luxury for travelers adjusting to time differences, and executed with the same excellence as the main dining venues. Our room delivered what can only be described as a world-class view—something truly unforgettable. Overlooking the skyline with uninterrupted views of the Shanghai Tower and the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower, it felt like waking up inside a perfectly curated postcard. Day or night, the view was simply breathtaking. The location is equally ideal. A brief walk places you along the North Bund, offering one of the most spectacular vantage points to take in the full beauty of Shanghai’s waterfront and skyline. One standout recommendation: do not miss the breakfast experience. It is far beyond a standard hotel offering—it is a curated culinary journey that reflects both international excellence and local flavor. The cocktail experience also deserves mention. Expertly crafted drinks, paired with a stunning outdoor terrace overlooking the skyline, created moments that felt effortlessly luxurious. What truly sets this property apart is its ability to deliver not just service, but an experience—one that feels intentional, elevated, and unforgettable at every level. Without question, this has been our finest stay within the W brand, and quite possibly one of the best hotel experiences we’ve ever had anywhere in the world. We will absolutely return."

"We chose W Shanghai – The Bund to celebrate a very special anniversary after years of long distance, and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful hotel experiences we’ve ever had. As someone working in the hospitality industry myself, I deeply value what it means to create unforgettable moments for guests—and this stay truly reminded me of why I love this profession. A special thank you to Lily. From the moment we arrived, her warmth, confidence, and genuine care stood out. She didn’t just provide excellent service—she made us feel seen and truly welcomed. Thanks to her, our anniversary became not just a celebration, but a memory we will carry with us for a long time. It’s rare to encounter hospitality that feels this authentic and intuitive. Lily embodies what true hospitality should be, and she is undoubtedly one of the reasons this hotel stands out. Thank you to the entire team for such a heartfelt experience. We will definitely be back."
