PB hotel design editorial

Few addresses on the Shanghai Bund carry the layered ambiguity of No. 2 — the former Shanghai Club, built in 1910 by British architects Tarrant and Moorhead in the Edwardian Baroque manner and long home to what was supposedly the longest bar in Asia. That building, with its rusticated stone base, arched windows, and onion-domed corner turrets illuminated against the Huangpu at dusk, now forms the heritage podium of the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund, a property that grafts a 20-storey contemporary tower directly behind the colonial facade. The pairing is architecturally frank rather than seamless — the tower makes no pretence of disguising its modernity — and from across the river the contrast between Portland stone classicism below and a gridded glass-and-concrete shaft above gives the whole composition an honesty that more cautious restorations tend to avoid. Inside, the 252 rooms and suites are finished in a palette of sage green wallcovering, dark mahogany sleigh beds, marble-topped case furniture, and custom floral-patterned carpets that draw loosely on Republican-era Shanghai taste filtered through a contemporary luxury sensibility. The Chinese restaurant, housed within the original building's pitched timber roof structure, makes the most persuasive argument for the conversion: dark exposed beams, latticed screens, and cylindrical lanterns suspended at varying heights create a dining room that feels genuinely rooted in place. The spa level below ground pairs a mosaic-tiled lap pool with a circular whirlpool set into warm travertine surrounds.

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai On The Bund Reviews

"Stayed here again in April 2026 after last staying here 10 years ago. The location is undoubtably great, being on the Bund and within walking distance to Nanjing Road. But there just isn’t anything else about this hotel that makes me want to come back. The front desk and door people try their best, but seem overwhelmed by the number of people they need to serve. Not their fault - the customer to staff ratios at these stations are quite high here. Biggest let down is the breakfast experience. The food selection is surprisingly limited. The baked goods - pastries and bread - were simply inedible. It was stale and was as if though somebody was making bread for the first time based simply on someone’s description of bread, rather than actually having any training in baking. I cannot believe one of the chefs tasted it and thought it was ok to serve. This low quality was consistent throughout my 4 night stay. The afternoon tea was also surprisingly disappointing. Despite its beautiful presentation, it was essentially various sweet mousses all of similar taste and texture, that didn’t really demonstrate much dessert making ability. The scones were comically small and weren’t of the correct texture, and were accompanied by an even more comically small serving of cream. Again, it was as if though someone was putting together an afternoon tea set based on someone’s description else’s description of it. If you’re simply looking for a place to stay that is convenient to get to the tourist spots, the you’ll be fine here. If you’re looking for a great, hospitable experience and memorable moments, it might be hard to find here. This feels generic and in many ways, not different to the many business hotels (eg intercontinentals, hyatts, Conrads and Hiltons) dotted across this city."

"This is sort of a weird half old/half new hotel. The old entrance opens onto the Bund area while the new entrance is around the other side of the block. The lobbys on both sides are fairly uninviting, nothing special at all. The room was very nice, the beds and shower were great. There is a walk-in closet with automatic lights, two sinks in the bathroom and a large tub. The worst thing was the door on the toilet area was etched glass - and not even completed etched at that - meaning that there was no privacy. In fact, it was so transparent that the automative toilet lid kept going up and down whenever I stood at the sink close to the (closed) toilet door. It almost got to be funny. Housekeeping did a good job of keeping us well-stocked with bottled waters, but I never understood why they felt the need to throw away our homemade "do not drink the water" signs every day. The view of the Bund from our room on the 15th floor was great. The elevators were fast. The people at the front desk spoke good English. The food on the breakfast buffet was average - mostly Chinese, otherwise overcooked eggs, stale cereal and uninspired pastries. We ordered the eggs benedict and avocado toast one morning and weren't impressed. We went to the Long Bar off the old lobby a couple times. They offer snacks (nuts, olives, etc) from a cart along with your cocktail. There were never many people there, but service was always slow."
